I'm fine with ditching the bonus points. I'd say highlight the weird and out-of-the ordinary stuff by using more real estate in the magazine if you want to or creating a special award, but leave the results up to flat-out competition between the vehicles' capabilities.
Well crap, I had started hyping my dog up for his role as "Chewbarka - challenge co-pilot", but he'll get over it. 
FWIW, I think most who pay attention or participate in the challenge, get that that an "oddball" car is more likely to get more coverage in the publication.
