Solution, change the family/holidays..... As far as those complaining about drag/autox the same day, there used to be an event here in Indy that ran drag, autox, and car show in the same day. 3 different run groups that were always doing something, and the event took about 10hrs. In 4 years of competing in that event, I saw only two failures, a 240sx melting an aluminum flywheel(drag), and a mach 1 snapping a caliper braket bolt(autox).
These cars are a bit more failure-prone than the cars running that event.... Put it this way, my car is one of the more sorted examples. That's not meant as a jab at anyone else, but just what happens when you have dirt cheap cars built that don't get many miles (if any) put on them before the event, cobbled together with used parts/parts that maybe don't quite fit/never came anywhere near this particular car.
It is true. Just keep your turbo from falling off this year.

I am prepared, don't you worry.

I'm more worried about keeping my head attached to my block.

Ahh, my first priority is reliability......I plan to start autox'ing this car and occasionally driving it next spring.....so I am baffled by others not doing the same.

I think this change is a great idea. Racing under the lights is always fun.

I wasn't complaining. I was simply recognizing that this is not a small schedule change. It is a complete overhaul of the entire event, from a strategic perspective. It's a different event.

I like the car show concept. I like racing under the lights (though tweaking and repairs is challenging in the dark). Not sure how I feel about both events in 1 day. We'll see....

Any chance of keeping registration (or pre- registration) the evening before at the hotel? It would sure be nice to reclaim the morning for racing and/or prep.

This.

I like meeting everyone, seeing all your friends from previous years, talking to the magazine staff, and the parking lot shenanigans that ensue after the check-in.

David S. Wallens wrote: Yes, we made some changes. Why? Now Day 2 is much more social. We often hear a complaint after the event: I never got to see the other cars. Well, now you have all day to check out cars, hang with your buddies, bench race, etc., etc. We picture the car show being more like the Concours de LeMons--more of a giant social event than anything. Yes, it's there will still be judging, but no more dog and pony show, waiting in line, etc. We'll come to you. As far as autocrossing and drag racing on the same day, those who need a few hours to change their setups can autocross first. Let's say they wrap up their autocross runs by 2:00--not unreasonable at all. Now they have two hours until the drag strip opens. They have eight hours until the lanes close. I admit this is unchartered waters. After the event, we'll take a look at how things went. Personally, I'm looking forward to the new format.

^^^This. The old format was unnecessarily inefficient, IMHO. The Concours de LeMons style thing beats the holy hell out of trying to figure out "E36 M3. Do we concours the car first? Auto-x first? If we sit in the 150 degree sun pushing the car every 15 minutes for the next 3 hours, are we going to miss our auto-x runs?"

There was already a E36 M3load of running around like maniacs trying to get E36 M3 done, make setup changes, etc. At least this way, all the cars are at one location (not some at hotel, some at track, with very little time to socialize during the day.) I really don't understand all the freaking out about running the auto-x and drags the same day. You would've had to do the unnecessarily crazed running around all afternoon anyway...and only gotten to see/chat with the owners of the cars in line with you.

Win, win, win, IMO.

It doesn't solve the biggest issue: how can we make sure the drags get to run. Otherwise I like it.

The later date helps that, no? Nov. in Gainesville is one of, if not THE, driest months by the numbers: http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weatherall.php3?s=641227&cityname=Gainesville%2C+Florida%2C+United+States+of+America&units=

wait, don't you live there?

And yes, that was also part of our reasoning: Drag racing under the lights sounds way fun.
Way easier to see fireballs and explosions at night.
Totally. Open headers, anyone?
You said we could run nitromethane, right? We could have flames and explosions!

Yes on both counts. Nov is better for rainand reduces the heat quite a bit.

Welcome change. I'm still not sure if I'll make it or not, but I think the change will be for the better either way.

It's been done, Most of us are too cheap to pay for dyno runs, the rest of us are trying to get our car running the event much less on the dyno.

Easy potential solution: Increase the cost of registration and include a dyno run with each car's registration. Bragging rights AND another interesting piece of data to put into the magazine so the readers can see just how the cars stack up power-wise...

So, no reg Thursday night? Seems like it would be giving the people reviewing the packets even less time to go over the entries and budgets...

Otherwise (though unless a miracle regarding my housing situation occurs AND the perfect nearly-sorted car falls into my lap I won't be competing this year...) I don't mind the changes. It will make it more interesting for the cars that require a lot of changes between racing formats, but everyone will be under the same constraints- and it IS called the Challenge for a reason. I can't see it making much difference on my planned $2014 entry since I doubt I'd be doing much different setup-wise besides potentially the nitrous for the drags.

Also makes it a bit more critical to plan well and not have the car grenade before the end of the drags since it won't be concours judged until AFTER all the racing is done.

Is the Valve Cover racing being moved to the track?

It would normally be Friday night at the Hotel, but we will be drag racing Friday night. We should have tons of time on Saturday at the site. (I've built two from scratch that are itching to race. Both using Pre-war technology.)

Magazine/event staff isn't quite that plentiful.

Plus, i don't want to have to choose between what to watch.
