Is that a motor driven turbo/supercharger or does that snail mean something else?

1.6 V6 turbo with thermal energy recovery systems along with KERS........I wish they would get over the green stuff when the vast majority of emissions are the tons of equipment flown all over he world.

Go back to V12s, institute a budget cap and open the tech regs.

Sounds kinda dumb when you put it that way, but the green aspect isn't just the race, it's the technology that comes from the race.

FTFY.

Although on second thought, nobody watches F1 to see how clever the teams are with a dollar. So...

Geeeeez, that should be on a stand in a museum of modern art somewhere. That's beautiful.

I wish they would run homologated engines. The engines in the F1 cars must show up in X number of real street cars in non-modified form.

My coworker keeps saying they should open up the engine regulations, but the team only has a certain amount of energy available to run the race with. Any fuel, any hybrid system, etc., but you only have this much energy.

In reply to CGLockRacer:

With the new fuel flow restrictor, they basically are running with a fixed amount of energy rate they can run. The articles I've read were pretty interesting- power will be dropped so much that the aero package they run a Monaco will resemble the one currently a Monza. And engine speeds are dropped a lot, since power effiency is so important now.

Being "green" isn't just about image, it's about attracting investment. There's a good reason only Renault, Mercedes, and Fiat are willing to spend the money developing an F1 motor along with making real cars. At least for Fiat, Ferrari is basically a cornerstone of F1, and it's actually part of the marketing. The ROI for F1 is really bad. The "green" engineering gives some technical benefit for making an F1 motor. Whether that means more companies will show up or not will be interesting.

That was the premise of Group C racing in the 80s. It worked, to an extent.

The problem is, people don't want to see cars running slowly to conserve fuel. That goes double for F1.

So how does this thermal energy recovery thing work?

Edit: Found out, it's a generator on the turbo shaft that can power the KERS system. Not really heat recovery so much as more efficient use of boost. I guess when activated it will close the wastegate fully and use the TERS generator to control boost, using the excess energy to power the KERS motor when normally that energy would have to be wasted.
