Honestly, I like it more than the outgoing model. All 3-cyl engines though? Hmm.

That is some kind of ugly. And I usually love quirky "ugly" cars. Wow I hope at a normal angle it looks better, because that is all sorts of bad.

I had the same thoughts, but after browsing through the gallery of shots, it's a real car. Apparently, the images look odd due to the super-long range zoom that was used to get them (beats me - I'm no photography expert).
I'm kinda "meh..." about them... but I'm the same way about the R56 as well.
Makes me appreciate my R53. I also think they are going to have a tough sell on a 3 cyl. New ones like mine are now north of 30k. Maybe it's me, but I don't believe the US market will tolerate a car that costs that much with only 3 cylinders, even if it is an improvement over the old version. It's a perception thing that I don't think they can overcome.
As for looks, each generation has gotten worse with the front end as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure regulations are dictating it, but it's not a great looking car anymore. Truth is, there are many other cars in it's price range now that are more attractive in many areas, including a short step to a 3 series.

^ Sound clip of the 3 cylinder in a 1 series, I think the exhaust note sounds better than the 4.
