Just my opinion......I think mostly you are right as it being a better all around driver. I have driven a R32 and owned a GTi. The Evo/STi are harder/stiffer and less polished but OMG they will leave the R for dead. They really are the closest thing to a rally car for the road. I have owned several WRXs and one STi and have a deposit on the new STi coming out here shortly. I could easily go for the Evo too. The Germans build some damn fine cars and it looks like this one will be extra fine but I am sticking with tried and true. The VW was the most problem prone vehicle I have ever owned and the Subies have all been problem free. I am not a hater of any vehicle though and I am glad more of these types of cars are being built. We now have the STi, Focus ST, MS3, Evo and the VW. Rock on.

I think I would buy a lot of other new cars before I considered the Golf R because VW. Also it looks really boring for a hot hatch.

There is a market for those of us who want stealth in a DD. I like blend-in boring. I'm on the road to drive not show off or draw the attention of the authorities.

I hear you on VW. Subaru has treated me well... but then again I hear horror stories from some Subie owners. So maybe it's always a crap shoot.

The last Golf R had one of the most magical sounding exhausts I've heard in a long time. I hope this one continues.

Having said all that... I'd buy a Golf R if it does come with the 6 speed, as the Audi S3 will not be coming with one. I seriously like the new looks of the STi though, and for all the people that (on this board in particular) bitch and moan about Subaru's, they are the best everyday vehicle that is still sporty that I have come across.

The Golf R is a complete drivers car. I owned an '06 STI and it was a hoot on the track and it absolutely sucked the other 98% of time I drove it. Ya know, on the streets as a daily driver. The interior was horrible, the build quality was horrible, it wasn't comfortable, it rattled, etc, etc.

The Golf is comfy. Stock to stock it's not as good of a performer as the STI/EVO and that's ok. It's going to be one of the last hatchback, manual transmission, AWD cars available and that alone is enough for me to buy one.

$35k for one is more than reasonable when you see that the STI/EVO's cost closer to $40k. I'd happily spend $10k more for a much nicer, awd, turbo, 6MT car vs the econobox, slow, less useful toyobaru.

Are they going to have the nice recaro seats and the new diff from the GTI in it?

How much do you know about parts availability and used car prices in Barbados?

And c) it is Mercedes and cheap one at that so the build quality will be on par with Subaru and the reliability of an old Jag. But it costs that much cause the badge on the front.

Are we on a US forum? Yes. Is there any indication the dude is from Barbados? Noooooo. Do I know he is from Barbados? Vaguely, after years of seeing him post it rings a bell. It actually makes it seem that much more silly on his end, and if I remember correctly, he is an ex-pat from the US, and Subaru's value has not changed in clost to the past decade, they've always been desirable. That's all.

A friend bought a '13 or '14 Golf R because he really liked the way it drove, plus he really wanted AWD.

Hence why I have an 09 WRX sedan. 330hp with a light tune, and it blends in with the Corollas in traffic. No wings, no flare, no stance....no tickets in 90k miles even though I always drive fast

My DD is a 98 Saturn. It doesn't get much more stealth...

I'm not an ex-pat from the US...it was a mistake to assume the depreciation was similar in the US (generally depreciation is similar in scale, but slower overall) but the STi models in particular depreciate hard and fast here. Subarus in general don't depreciate too quickly here.
