This just in: Ranger50 has had the best life ever, for so long, that he’s unaffected by the single most significant development in the history of the Corvette.
I'd like to hope it wouldn't be much more expensive, but who am I kidding? We'll be lucky if this doesn't add $20k to the price. The Corvette had the performance-for-dollars metric cornered, this could change that.
I also hope there's plenty of foam-block camouflage in that shape, the rear fenders look unnecessarily tall which makes the rear wheels look smaller, and the headlights would look a lot better if they were lower on the nose, if that's legally possible. If not, it's not too late to bring back pop-up lights!

They're doing this to go after Ferrari, Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche.... oh and Ford in the GT ranks. The last two generations of Corvette have changed greatly based off of their racing efforts, both to keep owners interested/involved and to homologate changes in production to apply them to the race cars. This mid-engined version is no different. There is a reason most of the "pure" race cars in the world are mid-engined, especially at the pointy end of the field where they tend to run, even Porsche made a bespoke mid-engined 911 to remain competitive and it isn't available to buy on the street (at least in that form).
This still allows the C7 to continue as sort of a "base" model if they so choose, that's still to be seen and this also opens the door for the Camaro to possibly move up and make use of the development that has gone into the C7, if not for the street, certainly for the track.
They announced the last C7 produced will be sold at auction in....June? I forget, just read it somewhere. They won't be made at the same time.
Since all the journos always comp vettes against 911s, despite the $40+ k price gap, I bet you that is their benchmark.
The base model + whatever package code gets you a dry sump will be fast as stink. No MT but 500 hp and an uber DSG. And for what, 65k? Dream car.
This is GM, so the ways they can screw up the above are myriad.
Yeah, rumblings I've read place sticker starting at only about $5k over current C7 prices. If so I'd be surprised, but that would make it an amazing deal.
Of course the prototypes have had some pretty public issues lately. Even though it's been delayed forever, I'd hate to see them drop with major issues.

If that's the case: Sorry left kidney, the right has always been my favorite.

Reports that have been going around list the base price similar to what it’s like for the c7. Maybe add about 5 grand.
I saw a fully camouflaged one (even more so then the one posted above) go the other way up i75 yesterday in Ohio, at first I thought it was a Ferrari under wraps but that didn't make any sense, then it clicked that it was a new C8.

Why do you think it will be more expensive? Just because they can charge more, or other reasons....
Seems to me that in terms of putting the car together, the Vette just became easier, much like a FWD car.

Mostly the cost of engineering a fresh platform with more specialized parts, plus a little because they can. I don't expect they'd leave much on the table between a base C8 and an Exige S.
So, where do the golf clubs go?
The C7 did not have great access (a bit tall), but it did have a reasonably big storage area.
In reply to GameboyRMH :
Seems like it would be a new chassis either way- new generation and all.
I understand the idea of just because, but I'm not sure if I really agree that it would be more expensive to make or engineer.
Yeah, the price for a base may only be $5K more than a C7 but who (besides us) buys a base? Bet most will come with at least some options that will drive the price up. Significantly.
It doesnt seem like the c7 came out that long ago. 2014. Mustang rides their generations for 10 years. Dodge rides their generations for, forever. Good for Chevy for actually spending money on engineering. See toyota? you can make money by engineering things yourself.
I'm shocked and somewhat impressed by GMs plan to eradicate boomers. I wonder how much they got from Pzifer to hold off on this plan until after Viagra went generic.

I'm not so sure about the "more specialized parts" angle.
Ever since the C5, the main reason it was front engined was inertia. It didn't really share anything with other product lines, drivetrain wise, except for parts internal to the transaxle.
I'd read that the C7 was just a stop gap car and never was intended to have a long life. I think the poplularity of the new body style caught them off guard.
I'm glad they are going mid engined, now if they'd just cut the C7 down to 3/4 it's size and use the twin turbo V6 I'd be all over that. Vettes are just too darn big! I want a lithe scalpel not a bigger hammer
