Hmmm, shortest race ever? I guess now is the time to look for that slightly used Miata race car.
It was total carnage. Felt bad for the innocents that got caught up in it through no fault of their own. That the instigator only got a drive-thru penalty seems a bit unfair since he took out half the field...

I dunno, there were probably 20 other cars pushing or being pushed at the same time that happened.
Had to rewatch it more then a couple times to be sure they even touched it was so slight.
How are they going to fix SM is the question. This is probably the biggest stage and they end up doing what SM does. At least they are consistent.
I was seriously laughing when I saw this. It is just not a good look.
The cars in a vacuum are great and I am sure the people driving are good folks but dam!!!
Is there to much parity?
1) This isn't spec Miata, these are MX5 Cup Cars (~100k new).
2) The front of the field are the fastest folks in the US looking for a shot at going pro and they're driving like their careers depend on it - because they do.
3) They don't care about optics, this isn't club racing, this is THE stepping stone to going pro for many of these drivers.
My friend who's a team owner sent me the in car from the start of that race - the outside doesn't do justice to how hard you have to drive - even at the start - to stay in striking distance. This is spec Miata turned up to 11 and it shows, especially at a track like Daytona.
Most of these races are excellent without major accidents. Sure, there is rubbing and usually some cars getting roughed up a little. However, the penalties are usually applied swiftly and most drivers are quite clean.
I really enjoy watching these races. The lead can change about 30 times in these races. The strategy of when to be out front and when to be in 4th or 5th is amazing.
In other words, this was an anomaly for this series.

Agreed. I think it's some of the best racing out there currently. Race 1 from Daytona was great and Race 2 (what was left after they cleaned up the big mess) was an incredibly entertaining finish!
When I arrived at the track Friday, we came out from under the grandstands right at start/finish, and the cars were just coming out of NASCAR turn four for the green flag. I thought "Cool, we'll get to see the start close up!". We were just past S/F when the first two cars got tangled up and pounded the wall directly in front of us, then the real carnage ensued. Seeing it up close in person is much different in person than seeing it on TV. It was kind of sickening, and you could practically feel the concussive impacts of the cars piling into each other.

Sickening is a good word, especially when you know the meat bags behind the wheel.
I was over by the Kink, so I watched it on the jumbotron. (I had my big lens with me.)
MX-5 Cup has traditionally offered some brutally close racing up and down the leaderboard. Hopefully next year’s Daytona race goes a little smoother.
