15x6" wheels, will 225 be too wide? Google searching finds there's a few folks who say they've done it, no issues, others say too much sidewall bulge.

Most of the good rubber options are 205/50, 225/45, and 235/45. I'm fairly sure 235 is too wide, and believe that 225 is pushing it.

Most tire manufacturers recommend a 7-8.5" wheel for their 225s but only 5.5-7.5" for 205s, what a difference ~13/16" makes.

Alas there seems to be nothing performance oriented made anymore in 215. 215/60/15 has a bunch of passenger car tires, but are a little tall and not what I'm after.

So squeeze 225s on a 6" wheel okay, or stick with 205?

IMHO R compounds no problem, street compounds a bit more iffy.

They'll mount, but for most street tires, they probably won't work great. A 205 would feel better (less mushy). It would be a tough call for which will have more grip though (it'll depend on the tire).

With R-comps, I'd definitely run the 225s, the mushiness will be less of an issue and the extra width will add grip in that case even with a less than optimal shape.

I've done it, back in the day, but it bulged and was annoying. The 205 was a better fit and handled better since more actual tread was on the ground vs being wrapped around the side of the wheel.

What aspect ratio? 45 would be nope. 70 would be perfect.

Virgos? Ah you'll be fine with that width.

No experience with 225 on virgos but i had 225s on hydras (6.5) and also on some 6in wide wheels and it was gravy, ive heard first hand reports they are okay. I still have 205s on my virgos which god bless that car is 2500 miles away with my brother who hopefully wont kill it

It's a PITA to install 225's on a 6" wheel. And that sidewall flex will make your steering feel like jello.

One of my friends had 275/60's on the stock 15x6 wheels on his mid 80's Cougar for a while.. it looked goofy, but it worked..

A friend of mine has a 99 Miata which for E Street can only wear 6" rims. He tried Rival S's in the 225 section width and was not at all happy with the result. 205 is THE choice for that particular question.

225s are crazy-wide for 6" wheels. It'll look like you're driving on 4 sportbike rear wheels and a good inch of tread will be catching wind instead of touching the road on each side. I've seen it before. I'd recommend 195s or even 185s for a 6" wide wheel, assuming 40~50 aspect.

A friend runs Hankook DOT race tires in size 225/50X14 on 6 inch rims, which he is limited to by racing class rules. He has no issues with this size tire on that rim. But as said in another post DOT race tires have stiffer sidewalls then street tires plus most track cars roll less and keep the tires flatter to the pavement.

In reply to GameboyRMH:

Not that short.. The stock size is 195/60/15 but most people run a 205/60 or 205/55. Theres been a few instances of 225s but i dont have a photo to show
