There's a lot of buzz over Hyundai's Genesis Coupe, and I'm as eager as anybody to see how the car finally turns out. A commercial for a local Nissan dealer caught my eye, though—they're blowing out 350Z's (starting, of course) at $22,900 to make room for the 370. Let's compare.
Nissan 350Z—306 horsepower V6, IRS, 3400 lbs. Proven chassis with plenty of aftermarket support. A reliable, solid performer available right now, no waiting. 23-27k.
OR
Hyundai Genesis Coupe—306 horsepower V6, IRS, 3500 lbs. Looks very promising, but is an unknown quantity thus far. Pricing hasn't been officially announced, but it's probably around 25k. The turbo 4 gives up about 70 horsepower and 100 pounds. It should be a bit cheaper, too, so it will be interesting to see which configuration ends up being more popular.
I think I'll keep my 238 horsepower, 2300 lb. Miata, but if I were looking for something new, I'd have a hard time picking.

2005-2006 GTO
400HP/400TQ V8, 3700Lbs, IRS, Big aftermarket, etc, etc. $15-$20K gets you in.
I honestly don't think the 350Z appeals to the same buyers as the Genesis Coupe. I'm hugely interested in the Hyundai but I really could care less about the Z, and I used to own a 280Z Anny Edition! Also, I think the Turbo version is going to be the hot seller. I think that V6 is probably at the near limit of it's potential N/A and factory-boosted motors always build huge aftermarkets. I think the Turbo will probably have the potential for more power than the V6 overall.
Hell, if you can get a 350Z for that then by all means. But the only new 350Z in my area is still at 29K

I probably could've got the one 370Z they have on the local lot for $29k.
The Hyundai homepage had pricing for the Genesis as starting at 32k for the small V6 & 37k for the big V6. At least it did when I looked a couple days ago. The most expensive Hyundai listed on the site.
pricing on their site I'm sure is for the sedan, not the coupe, that will be an entirely different animal price wise.

It's a V6 and a V8 and that's the Genesis sedan, a luxury car aimed square at MB/BMW/Lexus/Audi. The Coupe is going to be smaller, lighter, cheaper, and have less content. Not to mention only a Turbo-4 and V6 right now as engine options.

it seems already that hyundai is going to have a hard time differentiating the genesis sedan that is marketed to those considering lexus/bmw/merc/etc from the genesis coupe which is marketed to compete with the sport coupes.
nearly everyone of these threads there is someone that comes in and says "oh, but wait, the hyundai site says the genesis starts at 32k, FALE"
If it came down to the two, I would wait for the boosted 4 cylinder version, sure the v-6 is nice, but there are plenty of generic aftermarket boost parts that should bolt on. You will probably have to wait for specific parts for the v-6 if you want to go for the genesis.
Anyone want to take bets on the first Phil Collins/Genesis commercial?
I like hyundai and would definitely give them a shot, but for the same money as a 350Z? "VQ please".

As far as I am concerned, the only Genesis worth listening to is the Peter Gabriel Genesis, but I doubt 70's prog rock is going to be used in modern car commercials.
I have to admit that I am much more interested in the Hyundai simply for the four cylinder option....affordable RWD is nice, but big V-6's aren't really my thing, either Korean or Japanese.
