I think you went one generation too far.

I would take a Z3 coupe over the Z4... but if I didn't have the choice, you would not have to twist my arm to make me smile behind the wheel of the 4
Dodge Viper
Plymouth Prowler.
You may disagree with the second choice but plenty of people still lust after Morgans and Triumph TDs, and even the Lotus Seven, while obviously being lighter and more sporting, is not exactly a "pretty" car.

The first gen Scirocco and Rabbit/Golf were Guigaro at his very best. Straight lines like Bertone', but with a sense of proportion like Pininfarina. Those are two cars to be proud to have in your portfolio as a designer
I find cars like the Lotus 7, Modern Lamboghinis, most modern Ferraris, evoke more of a visceral response. Not aesthetic beauty, but a more primal effect. The vulgarity of the Vipers, Vettes, Lambos just can not be denied, they push other buttons.
The alfa 8c is a beautiful car and one I forgot about. I remember the TG test of it and apparently it is horrible. So bad they said it wasn't a car but moving art. The 458 in person really is gorgeous too.
As far as the coupe designs there has been allot of research done as to the hood cabin ratios and that is the result of the statistical analysis of psychological focus group testing. Ahh the modern car building method (then you tweek the small edges for aero) I have to say that I like what they have discovered.
On a side note, why would one buy a 1 series over the Z4 coupe?

Maybe it's because I've seen mainly 60yo women driving the Z4 coupe while mainly 30-40yo men driving a 1?

I might kind of agree with you.
On top of this I will say the new morgan aero, the s2000cr and just maybe the MR2 turbo.

This isn't the coupe version?
It's outstanding!
And I agree with OP. Especially after getting to see a few new Aston's up close and personal..............if I ever won the lottery or got a big inheritance, that's what I would buy. No question. A gentlemen's sports car.

That actually looks like an Aston with new front clip

That is the coupe which is not available yet. Not that I can afford one yet anyway.
OK I will play.
For some reason I really like the body style of the early 2000 jags. I think it complements the original very well.
My list of modern classics that are not massively expensive (aka over $50k). The XJ6R (the last performance Jag equipped with the Jag straight 6), E36 M3 (can't believe no one has said that yet), Z06 'Vettes, MKIV Supras, FD RX7.

I actually see the opposite here,

The only person I know with a Z4 is a 63 year old woman. I wouldn't buy a one series over a last gen 335ci though. I would if I was getting a 128i. Don't know why but this is what I would do.
OK so I'm biased, but I do think the 06-09 (08-09 in US) C30 is the best looking car sold for less than $30k in the last 10 years. The new nose (09+) just doesn't work as well
I don't think any sane person can disagree with the above two, I'll grant this one may be a bit more polarizing.

I am not saying it looks bad (in fact I would quite like a C30) but I seriously doubt the C30 is ever going to be a classic. Volvo while it is a respected car maker doesn't have the name recognition of many of the other car makers mentioned here, it wasn't sold in massive numbers and it doesn't have looks that make you snap your head around.
