Some of the listeners have come to know my love for station wagons. I'm thinkin' I should start to do a wagons segment for the show. Fidelity101's post got me thinking of this.
What detailed information about specific wagons, stock or otherwise could be fun and interesting. My main goal with a "wagon segment" would be to share some laughs with the listener.
Any ideas or even vehicle suggestons? Volvo hybrid wagons?
Wagon orientied goodness, I approve.
you can do a variety hour kind of thing so it has many mini segments:
- Will it fit!?
- Why wagon owners love wagons (interview)
- New wagons we get
- new wagons we can't get
- vintage wagons
- History of wagons?
- various glimpses of wagon culture
- subie sluts! (lets be honest, sex sells!)
Haha. Not a bad idea. We can run either way. Really, in a one hour segment with commercials, it can be 35-45 min of talk. All of this can fill up two hours easily, so mini-segments butchered up to many shows would work best... You've given me food for thought, sir.
A 2004 5 speed Subaru Forester XT can run 14.3 quarter mile times stock (citation needed), haul two kayaks on the roof and a dryer (in the box) in the back with the seats folded down.

I would trace the history of the shooting brake/estate, woodies, 50's-60's Detroit muscle, European one offs, the AMG Hammer, the MG X-15, the CTS-V....
shooting-brake.com is acting screwy, (same basic website) so try:

Best!,

Damn, I thought this was a response to the wagon thread I started!
Obviously I approve!
the "Will it fit?" one just brought to mind...
I don't know if a Prius qualifies as a wagon, though the internet seems to disagree in spots...
however, years ago I worked at Circuit City,
and we managed to load a 50" plasma TV (inside/including the box) into the back of one and shut the hatch. It was close but it went all the way in without problems as I recall.
Why did minivans and then SUVs replace wagons as the default family hauler?
Personal view: Body on frame wagons that could tow something disappeared.
It used to be that you could see a big wagon or sedan towing a trailer or a boat. It got to a point where even big wagons did not have a tow rating big enough to haul around the boat on weekends.
Then you could get into the whole stigma of being a Minivan driver and such.
Thanks for the info guys, I'm planning on figuring a segment out within the next week and get this train on the road, as they say.
In other news, the show before me had Bob Costas on the air. We should have kept him on the air for Turn Left.

"Will It Fit" was an idea I had for a segment from the start. I was thinking engines, though. We can roll both direction with the wagons, but I do like the idea.
Bonus about my show. Its my show. I don't give a berkeley what the internet, says about!
^^
ooooh, haha, right.
I like the engine idea better anyway.
I won't get into how my dad used his 1980's something Fiat Strada to haul some very large desks that wouldn't fit in the Country Squire....
carry on ! :)
How about "wagon snow shootout."
Load a family of 5 and all their skis/snowboard gear for a weekend at the local resort, and what wagon (non-SUV) will get all five of you and all your stuff there in a foot of freshly-fallen snow on the mountain roads.

Hmm. I have a prius and dont consider it a wagon, but i can understand why someone would. I kind of think of the Prius V as a wagon.
As for why minivans and SUVs replaced wagons, that's an interesting subject but if it's loaded with contemptous snark about minivans and suv's id probably switch channels. I think one of the great things about GRM (and i have spent time thinking about why some car forums end up great and others don't) is that since it doesn't cater overtly to any one thing, it doesn't naturally encourage bandwagons and nut-swinging and trash talking of "everything else". If you can channel a little of that while keeping it entertaining, awesome.
