My friend Jeff used to race an Audi a4 turbo quattro in NASA GTS, (SCCA ITR?) class back in the day, the gutted, open exhaust, awd turbo car was realy neat and plenty fast for being stock turbo. Always wanted to do a challenge A4t since then. Heres a $1000 runner. Thoughts?

not bad, but for a little more money you could find one in better condition.

if you could get that, ditch the body and throw the motor/trans into something, that would be awesome!! There is a cheap Ebay turbo kit for something like $680... Think its a T3/T4, FMIC, mani, wastegate, oil feed, return line and downpipe! You could get a set of injectors and some big turbo software, you could make some big numbers! Ive heard something like 300 wheel hp!!
I think it's do-able and would like to see it.
"The Terminator" is a rallycross trailer queen from New England Region that was supposedly built cheap (salvage title iirc?) and puts the hurt on plenty of Scoobies.
"01 Audi A4 aka the Terminator. Car is gutted with two sparco seats, weight 2800 lbs. Bilstein hd's with s4 springs, stiffens ride and raise ride ht 3/4". k04 turbo, bigger injectors, larger intake plumbing with cone filter. Boost is turned down to 19 lbs. No cat 2 1/2' exhaust with one muffler. 15" Audi aluminum wheels with a large assortment of rubber mounted. A large wing on the trunk for bling."
I think the standard challenge recipe could be applied successfully: GUT / BOOST / TIRES with a some Quattro thrown in to spice it up
EDIT: found this quote: "And as far as cost my codriver and I built our Audi for 6k, and it is competitive everywhere it goes." I'm guessing a good portion of that is from an initial purchase price > $1k, sparco seats, and at least $1k in rally tires.
It's a couple hours away, slushbox V6, but it's cheap! Apply Duke's eBay turbo gift basket and grin.

There is a reason for that. RUN. RUN FAR AWAY /thread.

The car is a bit heavy and the drivetrain really sucks up a lot of the car's power. Brakes are small so you'll be changing them often. Suspension design could be better for a track/race car.
While the A4 is cool, I think you could get farther with a different car if racing and track days are the goal. Its your time and money though.

Am I missing something? The one linked in the original post is a manual 1.8t unless my eyes deceive me.
^^^ I think you are correct. I just saw that one post and my life flashed before my eyes

If by "$1000" you mean "$500" and by "challenge" you mean "LeMons," yes.
I wonder what kind of minumum weight is possible? I was thinking 2600-2800lbs. Brakes should be enough with some better pads/fluid for autox and drags. I thought the A4 had a great front suspension with the quattro link aluminum control arms( but a maintinence nightmare). Add a rear sway bar. Find and source turbo upgrades or find a cheap kit and dump pipe it. Really not sure how good the drivetrain is for more horsepower, clutch upgrade for sure if possible. Not really looking for shock and awe just a really good balance of Germen engineering/AWD and that turbo sound. But til then I just need the rear view mirror from this parts car and wait for a $500 one later for a GRMC/Lemons beater

The rallycross A4 above is 2400-2500lb, if I recall right.
He also did something I'd always thought of doing: moved the control arms out to the A6 mounting points. Tons of camber that way. Just have to watch that you don't pull the axles apart.
Of course, I'd also ditch the four-banger and throw in a V8.

where was your freind out of? I ran across a very similar sounding race car w/ NASA at Putnam Park a few years a go.
I was thinking of a 01+ a4 with 5 speed and a v6, turbo'd ofcourse. The V6's are alot cheaper then the 1.8t's, mostly because the availability of parts for the 1.8t.
