I don't really expect Mazda to ever bring back the Rx-7 (Rx-9?). It's too close to a Miata/MX-5, and they're too small of a car company to have two sports cars like that in their lineup. That doesn't mean I can't wish for it, though. :)
I wonder if they could get their hands on the BRZ/86 chassis, a little bit of Mazda chassis tuning, some swoopy bodywork, a few new interior parts to remove the rear seats.. BOOM Developmentally cheap RX-7. Toyota sells/sold the Mazda 2 as a Yaris, More volume on the BRZ/86 chassis would probably not be a bad thing for Toyota/Subaru. If it was a 2 seater and priced in the low mid 40's it would only likely threaten the Supra and compete with the 400Z and not challegne BRZ/86 sales. The connections exist. Get on it.

I'd think it's because the ND chassis isn't federalized as a Coupe. Also the HP targets for a RX chassis would be quite a bit higher then the ND and require substantial running gear changes. The BRZ/86 could probably be adapted much easier to a 2700lb/270hp vehicle (Which it will be interesting to see what is done HP/WT with the rumored Lexus version of the BRZ/86). But yeah they could use the ND chassis architecture to make a RX like an inverse of the NC/RX8.

While some of you might say that the Boxster already fulfills this purpose, I would like to see Porsche revive the 914 as their new entry level sports car.
Could you make a new RX7 and not have it be a rotary?
Could you put a high revving small displacement turbo v6 in it? Call it a rx9? I would push it up to C7 levels of performance. Make it a halo car. But undercut the current C8 base price. Keep it lightweight high reving smaller size two seat sports car.

It should properly be called an MX-9 if it has a piston engine, IMHO.

Only difficulty is, the simplicity, and let's be honest, total lack of any safety features, are what made it so wonderful to drive. I doubt you could build one today that's anything less than 150% of the size and of the original. Size to account for crumple zones and safety cages, weight for protection bars, emissions equipment, etc.

Kind of working on that, at least for myself.
Nearly every panel is already available in fiberglass.
The missing piece is the firewall.
I bought a junk Mk. II to make the missing mold from.
Original body is structural so a tube chassis will be required.

Something about that Eagle looks wrong, messed with proportions, lack of correct lights and bumpers?
Having had real E-Types I don't think I could bear an inferior replica.
Particularly if it had the wrong engine in it.

I will just have to suffer with just my Europa, 68 El Camino, Dio Tipo Alfa, 78 Alfa Spider, TRICK-6, Tatum-Suzuki, Morris Minor touring, etc.
