My drag dr21 wheels require spline drive nuts due to the clearance in the wheels. The special socket barely fits in there.
This is a miata.
What are the alternative options? I hate these nuts every time i pull the wheels. I want something that i can put a normal socket on....
In general the best you can do is find a lug nut that will fit a 17mm socket. If you can't fit a 17 in the hole then sometimes the hole is shallow enough to fit something like this.

Gorilla 30038 are 12x1.5 and use a 17mm socket. Don't know that they'd be skinny enough but they're cheap.

I think I'm up to about 3 spare sets of the spline drive that people give me because they don't like them. Fine with me cause i like them. I'm not sure what other options will work.

I use these on my spec Miata. They work well and the price is right. They take a17mm socket

their hubs are awesome too
I have had two sets of lug nuts with internal engagement tools, and both worked well. The one used a regular 12mm Allen wrench and the other used a special 8-point drive that was really two sets of 1/2 square drive, and they could be taken loose with a 1/2" ratchet extension.
I have a set of Enkei wheels that require spline drive nuts. They have two different hole PCDs, so the holes for each nut are small. My narrowest 17 mm socket doesn't come close to going into the holes.
So...tell me again why companies are trying to re-invent a thing that has worked so well for so long?
