In hooking up the alt there are only 2 wire out of the small plug. They "F" and "L" I figure that the L is for the light but what is the F for? Does it need hooked up? And to what. Both are small wires. This is out of a 96 roadmaster.

Field ?

Usually the F terminal is for field and hooks up to where you want your voltage reference to come from. The voltage regulator will adjust output voltage as required so that the sensed voltage coming back to it on that wire is the 13.8 V or whatever nominal it is set for, so no coil resistors or fan speed controls should be in that circuit.

L is usually for the light. And grounds one side of the bulb when the alternator output is less than battery voltage. So one side of the bulb to L and the other side to the run terminal of the ignition switch.

google "CS alternator wiring" and go by that.. it's pretty simple.

one of them can get looped to the big stud on the back of the alternator, which is hooked directly to the + terminal of the battery... the other one gets routed to the ignition switch thru a light bulb to tell it when to turn on...
