BTW, has anyone used Torque sticks?  They seem to be accurate enough for tire shops, although I always use a torque wrench myself.

They're just springs, which means they do wear out.  I have had them break in my hands, too.

Torque sticks won't let you feel if the stud is stretching, or if there's a ton of excess friction at the lug nut/wheel interface so it tightens all gritchy instead of a smooth torque-up.

I just use a torque wrench and have it recalibrated every winter.

I was hoping this discussion would be about the fact that torque isn't really the value we actually care about.  Regardless, I learned a decent amount from this.  Thanks, Maschinenbau.

And it irks be greatly when people put oil on threads that are supposed to be dry, or "whatever" on threads that are supposed to be lubed with engine oil.  Congratulations, you are now massively overtightening things.

Whenever I pull a wheel off and everything is slimy with oil or grease or worst, antiseize, I recognize that a hack has been in here before, and I examine everything thoroughly to see what else they did wrong.

(IIRC, moly lube has something like a 90% torque reduction factor, to get the same amount of fastener tension)
