Damn, those things make really neat little track cars. They are the Honda Civics of Korea when it comes to aftermarket parts.

But serious talk: It'd be more accurate to say the Probe is really an MX6 rather than vice versa. It's Mazda e'er'thang. You can't even really get parts for the Probe at the Ford dealer, but you can get parts for it at the Mazda dealer.

Probes are easier to find, though for some reason i feel like they're starting to command more money than MX6s. Probably because nobody knows what the MX6s are. I've seen approximately 5 1st gen MX6s in real life that i can recall, ever.

They're worth it, though. Mine was purchased for $900, and has been my obnoxious DD for the last 2.5 years. I've put 20k miles on it, largely trouble free. The only time it's stranded me was with a bad clutch slave cylinder. (The original from 1990 gave out after 180k miles.)

Mndsm over there paid $400 for his and i don't think there's really anything wrong with it.

I wouldn't bother with the non-turbos, personally. You might also be able to get into a 2nd gen MX6/Probe V6 for $1000 as well. You'll see them for $500 or less with a bad transmission (go pull another one out of the junkyard for $75) or "doesn't run, don't know why." (It's the distributor, fix it with a $10 GM HEI module.)

If I were shopping for myself, I'd be all over the fast stuff but my friend is an absolute noob and I've had bad experiences in the past with noobs getting in trouble, having a panic reaction and steering into ditches.

I know and am jealous. We were still equating all hyundai's with the Excel at that point so people ignored them or bought them, trashed them and moved on.

Nah, either generation should be in the 15s in the quarter mile in stock form.

The 1st gens will hustle down into the 13s with a chip, boost controller, intake, and exhaust, though.

But seriously, if you don't want to hoon a surplus cop car, the Probe / MX-6 sounds like a good path if you can find one. I ran a '89 in the $2004 Challenge and found it was very well balanced right out of the box.

Others I'd consider would be a BMW E30 if people in your town don't think they have God's own chariot (but that would be appropriate if they did, given the mission...) or a first gen Neon (which I can pretty much guaranty you they won't be pricing it like it's God's own chariot...).
