I really hope I'm wrong.
12a RX7 had 115hp and weighed around 2500lb depending upon options
Not trying to be the Spec Nazi, but the SA22 Rx-7 only had a 100 hp. None the less, it was still peppy.
Meine Fuhrer,
I think all of our fears are not 197hp at 2300lbs, it's 197hp at 3200 lbs.
sounds pretty wicked though

Don't forget that the rsx type s and teg type r made 195-200 hp from 1.8 - 2.0 liters. My rsx weighed in at about 2850 and ran a 14.7 1/4 mile. Probably would have been even quicker with rwd
I am thinking it will weigh around 2600 to 2700lbs, that is the area the Elantra comes in at. RWD and another 50hp would make for a fun sports car. IMHO

Sounds like it has a 50 lb flywheel, what a slow rev.

Looking at my most recent issue of motor trend, its saying that the subaru version at least is going to "weigh about 20 percent less than a WRX STI, just above 2700 pounds."
also the center of gravity will be at knee height.
There's a lot of good discussion in this thread here, and Imma let you finish, but I think it's important to remember that GRM Magazine should compare this car when it hits the streets to a mk1 Ford Capri.

For now, I'm sticking with my little Corolla coupe, I think it sounds better

Sounds like a current i4 Camry with an exhaust leak.

200hp sounds like a lot to me!
But then, I'm stuck in the 90's at the moment, my most powerful v8 car has 260hp.
You drive a Caprice, don't you?
LS-400, though my last daily driver was a Roadmaster wagon. ;-)
Ugh, I want to slap every single person who says this car should have a 6-cylinder, turbo, or should be a convertible. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!
Those cars are already on the market. You know what's not? An N/A 4-cylinder 2+2 coupe. You want a convertible? Go buy a Miata or a Z. You want more power at the cost of more weight? Go buy a Z, Mustang, or Genesis Coupe. You want an N/A 4-banger with a roof and a backseat? You give up getting RWD, or you buy used (and usually beat to hell or drift-taxed out of a reasonable price).
Almost as annoying is the "Wait for Subaru AWD version!".

This.
I'm still hoping this does quite well so othe companies jump on the bandwagon.
I'd love for Mitsu to put out a new Starion to be roaming the roads.
New Starion would be awesome; too bad Mitsu's killed all their performance cars and are pulling out of the US market.
With the way the job market is and the buying power of the dollar going down, you'd think the manufacturers would want to try and drop prices down and compete harder against the used car market. Used to be the typical auto loan was what, 3 years? It was 5 for a long time, now it's starting to push out to 6 and 7 year loans?
Reverend Dexter gets it! Were basically talking about a modern 240sx here. It is a unique creature that nobody else is making. I am still convinced that this will be my first new car.
P.S. I'm sliding around a hardtop S2000 hot wheels on my desk while typing this.
something to remember when you think that 197 is not enough HP.. the M3 of e36 vintage only had 240hp here in the states with 3200 or so pounds to push around. Nobody has ever accused that car of being slow.
If they can keep this car below 3000 pounds.. it will be a winner

A turbo setup would add a negligible amount of weight.
I want more power WITHOUT more weight.
And THAT car does not exist in this market.

The one with the wing and hood vents? Cause I'm looking at that one right now. But I'm sliding an Elise around.

arghh, i can't get my FA5 Si into the 14s stock. 15.2@95 is my best run as of now, it's at a crappy track though.
But honestly, 200hp from an Si is plenty if the car handles well. I'm tearing it up in the autoxes around central florida with my Si, keeping up with some fast rides....Even at the PDX I recently did I was keeping pace with some Vettes and IT prepped rides.
200hp with the torque from a flat 4 and hopefully a decent curb weight should be fine and should be a mid 14 second car. But Toyota could screw all of this up.
my car weighs 2840 with 3/4 tank of gas in it, without me, and has 156 hp supposedly, if this car weighs the same and has 200 hp, I can imagine it being very fun.
I'm still somewhat interested... but if i get one, it will remain stock for... a day. At best. I am underwhelmed, but i see potential.
Oh, and here's a first: E36 M3s are slow. (in the US)
Gee, if only some manufacturer made a small, lightweight, RWD coupe with a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder. You know, something under 3000Lbs with about 175HP and a manual trans. Sure, it wouldn't be fast, but it could be so much fun! Limited slip, big tires, and a good suspension. Oh, and cool styling, a hatchback, and be priced under $27K. They would sell like hot cakes!

Yeah, but you can't follow that up with prematurely ending production and shutting down the entire brand. Hell, I would have purchased one had they made more than 1164 production cars.

Styling wise, Saturn Sky > Solstice.
That car is hideous.
I would be excited until I realize that you can get a base V6 mustang that puts down 300 hp and gets 30 mpg for under $24k and will run in the 13's stock.
If these actually end up light are priced well and get significantly better mileage I would be suprised. I see them being close 2800lbs getting 33-35mpg and running low 15 second 1/4 miles as they sit. Sound like my wifes Forester but with better mileage and no utility. It would also lack the ability to run low 13 second 1/4 miles with $1500 in upgrades. They will end up like the Genesis. Lots of hype but not spectacular in anyway.
I get the small car. Hell I have 4 1st gen RX-7's and a Miata. However I like power which is why one RX and the Miata have V8's. Driving the crap out of a slow car is kind of fun until you get smoked by every minivan / and grandma at the light. Even the built 13b in the one RX-7 would loose its ass to a new Accord.
