Does anyone have personal experience with fitting a tire that is 0.5" beyond the max rim width? The tires and wheels in question are P215/55R18 Blizzak W80's on 18X8 wheels.

By stretch standards. It is pretty stretchy though to people (IE Me) that like to put too much meat on too small a wheel. I remember on my 2nd Gen MR2, I was running staggered 17s (7 & 8) with 205s on the front and 235 on the rear. The fronts were too narrow and the rears were ok. These were 40 series tires though. On a 55 I doubt it will be as bad.

Why do I like this so much?
Back on topic, like others have said, a 215 on a 8" rim isn't a terrible stretch, you should be fine. The stancenation/VW MKIV kids do that on a 9" wheel like it's no big deal...

Because it looks good.
Even the wheel setup looks good, but it sure won't work good

That IS a stretch. It won't get you stancenation flatbill cap stuffed-animal-on-the-towhook street cred, but it's still a mild stretch.
Google image search for your tire size and wheel width. Should give you an idea as to how it'll look.
and im just over here thinking about 215/45 on an 18x9. oh the humanity.
my truck's tires are "1/2 inch too narrow" for the rims. Summit refused to mount and balance the tires for me when I ordered the wheels and tires. its fine.

That's section width, not width at the bead. A 215 on an 8" wheel will be slightly stretched for most 215s (i.e. sidewall is not squared up)

It really doesn't work ~at~all~. It was lowered by removing the springs. Yes, you read that right.

I put 215/45-17 Kumho XS on lightweight 17x8 Kosei K4R's for my track set...very nice fitment, smoother ride, and better responsiveness than stock setup - thats with a less stiff sidewall tire than the stock Michelins.
I daily drive with 205/45-17 Ecsta Sport LE's on 17x7.5 Enkei's... because I value agility and quickness and wanted to maximize it while increasing the performance capabilities over the stock tires (especially in the wet).
Match your TREAD WIDTH to the wheel width...for the 215/45-17's Kumho XS tread width is ~ 7.8" and for the 205/45-17 Sport LE tread width is ~ 7.5"
Thing is those winter tires have a narrower than normal tread width...on the order of like 6.5" verses near 8 to 8+ range for most 215/55-18 summer tires, so they will look very stretched on an 8" wide wheel in comparison to the summers.
