Thinking about getting one for the Miata. Space is limited, and we want to take a road trip soon. Just trying to get storage where space is wasted for storage. Any experiences?

I have some German friends who have an old set of the Atlantic Design trunk bags. They've travelled hundreds of miles over the last two decades with those things. Obviously they like them a lot.
Personally, I treat the trunk like a piece of luggage instead of packing luggage and fitting it in the trunk. Try to keep anything out of the cockpit. Makes it seem like you're on a run day drive instead of packed into the car.
I have a foam kayak roof carrier that I install sideways on the trunk lid (when I say sideways I mean sideways compared to it's intended orientation) and a small rooftop bag that I mount on the kayak mount.
Ultimately I would like to get a spare trunk lid from the wreckers and make my own custom frame on top for storage. Unbolting and bolting on a different trunk lid would probably be quicker than mounting the kayak carrier.
Been doing 4-5 day Miata road trips for years with not-so-economical packing methods. A trunk rack & canoe trip style dry bag ended the range & weather anxiety for good.
Something like these:
I looked at trunk bags, then decided that only takes up space in an area that is already for storage. My idea was to utilize the space between the seats and the top. It’s wasted space at this point. I can’t just set stuff back there with the top down, or it’ll go flying into traffic. So a “dufflebag” style thing that Velcro’s to the brace bar behind the seats would be great.
I have one of those bags for a Miata, D rings that snap into the tonneau cover to secure it. Long and skinny, but surprisingly voluminous.
Oh right, behind the seats. I've got one kicking around even though it doesn't fit with my roll bars. They're really useful. Mine snapped on to the studs for the soft top boot and didn't really get in the way of the top. Acted as a windblocker and easily accessible storage that didn't feel like it took up space in the car.
I think mine might have been from the now-defunct Atlantic Design and had enough insulation to actually work as a moderate cooler. GoMiata has a blobbier version.
