I have always thought of the LS as a pretty car.. but the few I still see running on the streets are all in terrible shape.

It seems to me like a decent car that met the unfortunate fate of being bought by a bunch of E36 M3ty owners.

It was a decent car that was never "tuned" to it's potential. Which made it have crappy re-sale values, and hence E36 M3ty owners.
Technically, it had as much or more potential than the 5 series. Never, ever, came close.
(and started the path of "what is Lincoln trying to be?" which I still don't know)

Neither. However, an 8.8 differential will fit. 8.8 gears won't, but the diff will.
In reply to alfadriver:
I doubt even Lincoln knew what they wanted.....hell, they barely seem to know their direction now. The LS is still probably the best handling Lincoln ever made however.

http://www.usautosterlingheights.com has a black 5 Speed Lincoln LS ($100.00 for trans + core): https://www.facebook.com/1384000358511632/photos/pcb.1748564415388556/1748563882055276/?type=3&theater (12th car in the album)

It's not the same transmission. And it's not that great of a swap candidate for a street car unless you can get a really tall rear gear because iirc the 5th gear is 1:1.
Uhh, one of them is a Getrag 221 and the other one is a Mazda M5OD. So the tangible difference is they are totally different transmissions with totally different everything?
I've never driven a 5spd LS but i've driven lots of M5ODs and i like them just fine in the trucks.
The Getrag 221 has a similar gear ratio to Getrags starting with 90s 3 and 5 series + ZF310 (E36 M3 and E34 530i). In fact, the ratios (with minor changes) were used until the introduction of the F3x cars (those have the double OD 6speeds).
The 4cyl cars ran 3.45 and 6cyl ran 2.93/3.15/3.23. The 530i ran 3.07. The 6speeds tacked on an OD gear.

Sorry, I wasn't accurate with my description: Lincoln LS 5 speed trans (or any transmission) would be $75.00 + core charge of $25.00, which means you would be out the door price of $106.00 including 6% MI sales tax. Of course you have to add your price of gas to get there & your own labor to pull it (they have A-Frame chain pull hoists for use).

Last time I saw one of these it was driven buy an older gentleman that had hacked the mufflers off. I completely approve of the noises it was making.
Back around 2003, a college buddy bought one of these (a 2000 V6 with an automatic). Aside from it being slow, I felt like the interior was squeaky, creaky, and cheap. I don't think 10-16 years of time is going to do that aspect any favors.
That 3.9 they offered was a weird little V8, and don't forget, the retro Thunderbird used it too. I thought it was a half baked effort back then, and time hasn't done it any favors. Unless I found a later V8 model in real nice shape for a super cheap price, I would probably pass.
The thing I discovered when I was shopping for one is that if you don't want a BMW, there's very little available in the small-midsized RWD sedan segment.
I had some kid stop light drag race me in a v8 LS. I was in my e28 M5. I was being lazy and still nosed him out of a win. Probably not relevant but the only LS experience I've got.
