Still don't have any exhaust parts so I'm going to run an open downpipe for a few days. It points into the "trans tunnel" area of the car where the resonator goes. I thought about using some metal to deflect the exhaust gases downwards and to the side, but that would just point it at the lower strut brace (white bar) and I'm not sure it would help get the gases out from under the car anyway.

Turndown underneath and don't leave the car running at a stop for very long
OK I think I'll buy a section of rain gutter to get it behind the strut brace then turn it down.
Why not let it run at a stop light for long? Just because of the heat?
You might get fumes in the car if you leave it running at a stop for too long.
OK I'll keep that in mind and be sure to drive with the windows down (where's that sunblock?)

Don't forget the earplugs.
I've driven cars with side-dumps before, it's not as loud on the inside
i've had plenty of cars with headers that just had mufflers under the car and i didn't die from carbon monoxide poisoning.. most of them had the "Fred Flinstone" mod done to the floor by nature and road salt..
I would not drive it more than around the block with out at least a turn down, or better yet a side dump.
My brother races with a chump car team, and at one event thier exhaust broke and they just tried to just run it with it dumping in the trans tunnel, but after about a half hour they had driveability problems, it turned out that they boiled the gas in the tank!
Definitely gonna build a ghetto turndown for it, I'll angle it to the side a bit to try to get the exhaust stream out from under the car.

I drove home 3 hours from a rallycross with my old Outback with the exhaust broken off right at the rear of the first cat (very similar looking to your situation. Other than being deaf from the exhaust and cold from keeping all the windows open due to feeling that I was getting gassed, I made it home fine.

Under the car is worse than a side dump.......I speak from experience there.

I had two pipes stopping at around the drivers ass on a truck with no problems, a Y pipe ending around the drivers feet on another, and two turndowns right before the rear axle on a Camaro and I've never died, even though all were regularly street driven in traffic and such.
I had a beater that basically dumped there, only in summer with windows open though.

As a safety standard, that bar is probably set a little low.
Its possible that carbon monoxide exposure may lead to brain damage before actually causing death, which could cause fundamental flaws in logic.

Seconded. Andy Hollis's CRX that he ran at last years One Lap of America had a muffler and turndown "in the tunnel." I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Your hearing is the biggest safety issue here.
