I never needed connections or anything. I just go strike up a conversation and ask. if they're closed I just get the number, then call, which was the case with the MR2 I mentioned earlier. I've bought 5 or 6 cars and one boat (that was such a bad idea) from junkyards and shops.
I did buy a previously abandoned wrecker, and some wrecker parts, from a scrapper, so now whenever he gets wrecker stuff he calls me. I don't own a tow business or anything, I just like old wreckers and the pros don't use the old stuff anymore, so it can usually be had cheap.
