We in the middle of a V8 transplant on the '73 Vega. Got most of the parts needed, but were wondering about an axle swap into the stock rear end.
Looks like the stock R&P along with the spiders will hold up for around town driving, and have HEARD that the five lug two week drive S10 axles will slide right in. They're a smudge shorter, but using the S10 backing plates and drums will do the job.
Has anyone any real knowledge of this? Almost seems too goo to be true. We picked up an S10 rear end and were getting ready to cut everything off of it to make ready for the new coil spring mounts and such, but if the original Vega housing can be used with S10 axles and such, this would just be SO much easier.
Again, need some sound knowledge, kinda hoping that this will work, but I'm also hoping that Taylor Swift will show up on my door step with a permission slip from her Mom to have sex with me, so . . .
In reply to TeamEvil:
I have a friend who bought a crispy Cossie just to stuff the rear end behind a V8 Vega he's building, but his reason was to gain better gearing(and maybe LSD?). I can ask him if he's heard of the S10 axle swap if you want though?
I think Taylor Swift is legal age now.
yes you can on the axles, I spent WAyyyyyy to much on a Monza rear. use a 12 bolt or a 9" Or the S-10 and wheels to work with it. all that would be cheaper than Beefing the Vega.
check H body dot com there is a early Blazer that has an 8.5 rear that is perfect sorta, I've quit Looking.

Thanks !
There's a lot of contradictory info/opinions on the net (BIG surprise !) Most of it shows up in the late afternoon when most middle schools have computer lab. I could use some facts from someone in the know. I guess that the S10 axles have the correct number of splines and are 1/8 of an inch shorter on each side. The S10 backing plates and drums will bring things up to stock spec.
For right now, we're just trying to get the car set up for the engine swap. Everyone claims that the stock rear will work if babied. The Vega Swap book says this was a common practice in the seventies and worked out OK.
Once the rear end is sorted out, we'll clean up the S10 rear end and look to welding coil mounts, correct shock mounts, and the brackets to work with the three link Vega set-up, right now . . . we just wanna get it back together and on the road to do some test and tune. See if things are playing well together or not.
