I'm certain i will feel like an idiot 2 posts in, but nevertheless...

GF has a 2019 4Runner with push button start. I know there's a mech key "hidden" in the fob. But I have no idea where the ignition switch that uses it is. Do I have to pry off the Start/Stop button? That seems like the only logical place for it, but I didn't really want to do that without being certain. Owners manual is no help.

I'm pretty sure the mechanical key is only for the door.  No specifics on that vehicle, but I've never seen what you are asking for.

Yep.  The mechanical key is so you can unlock a door if the battery is dead, so you can open the hood to charge/replace the battery.  You'll always need to use the button to start the vehicle.

There ARE some cars, I think Chryslers, that do have a lock cylinder tucked behind the push button.  Leave it to Chrysler to go for the form while ignoring function.  (The point of push button start is that there's no mechanical avenue of attack to steal the car)

On some Toyotas, if the fob battery is dead/weak then the fob has to be held directly to the start button so the car can start with a magnetic connection (rather than an electronic connection.)

I'm wondering if this is your issue???? Just guessing.

That is true for most vehicles.

Hmm. Well I feel slightly less of an idiot.

The only reason I care is I'm trying to reset the "Maintenance Required" msg after changing the oil. And everything ive seen says turn the mechanical key to the Acc position. Which you can't do at the door.

With push button start....  Turning on the car requires "foot on brake" when hitting the Start Button.

To just get to Accessory Position.  Hit the Start Button one time, but with "foot off the brake."

Resetting your Maintenance Light likely requires

1. with the car off, push on odometer button and hold

2. while continuing to hold odometer button in, one-time push the Start Button with foot off the brake

3. Continue to hold the odometer button until the Maintenance Light goes away.  During this wait the odometer may flash various numbers that are not important.

The odometer must be in Trip A first.

Another thing.  Check to make sure that there isn't an option to reset maintenance in the settings tab in the instrument cluster center display.  That way's much easier.  A lot of newer Toyotas have that.  It'll let you reset maintenance both ways.
