Hello All,

I have some pistons (well most of the internals actually) from what I think is a 1.6L Miata. I say think, because I got these from the wife of a deceased club member when she was cleaning out his stuff from the garage. He had a really nice 1990 with a Jackson Racing supercharger on it, and most of the other spare parts seem to be of the 1.6L vintage.

Anyway, two of the pistons appear to have had some carbon buildup scrubbed off using a wire wheel or something. This has left small scratches on the surface of the piston. There are no sharp edges (the edges are rounded) to the individual scrapes, but I was wondering if these will cause any issues or be unreliable once put back into an engine and put into operation? See the image below for a crop of the scratched pistons, with a link to the full res image of all 4 pistons (very large file).

EDIT: Darn hotlink didn't work. Here is the image link: Scraped Pistons

Link to big (9+MB file) picture: All 4 Pistons

Please take a look and let me know if you think that these are useable.

Thank you.

That looks fine, polish them up if you want.

How's the skirt wear? That's more important

That should be fine, as mentioned, it's the skirt wear you're worried about, and the wrist pin bore.

Thanks! The skirts seem to be OK, some light discolouration, but no scratches or score marks. I am planning to sell the items as I don't need them, and will be including all sorts of "as-is", "no warranty", "no guarantees", etc. type of statements, so I just wanted to make sure that I was going to sell something that I had reasonable confidence of their usability. I will also be pricing them to reflect the fact that there is a lot of unknowns.

Thanks again.

Yes, they are reusable as long as they measure up well. If I were using them in my own engine, I'd just hit the tops with some scotchbrite or something similar to fade the scratches out a little. On the other hand, those scratch marks may improve turbulence inside the combustion chamber, improving power output.

If you want to distinguish between 1.6 and 1.8 pistons, the former are 78mm in diameter, the latter 83.

I measured, and they indeed are 1.6L, as they are 78mm. They also have some little "B6" casting marks on the underside, so that is good that everything is lining up!

Thanks for all the help, it is appreciated.
