I was at the Toyota dealership last week and I happened to walk past the body shop. I guess that these were pre-2005 Tacomas!

Gee, I don't know, but it looks like a few / miscellaneous frames. I guess I'm missing the point (what with there being no up close shots).

My BIL had a pre-2005 Tacoma and he took it in for some service a few years ago. They managed to talk him into trading for a newer model, even tho he wasn't looking for a new truck. He got his while dealers were still giving 150% of KKB values towards a trade-in.

Looks like the shop truck still has a usable frame.

Can we just sticky a few threads about how aweful Toyota is and move on? One can be devoted to Tacoma/pickup rust issues and the other can be a general catch all for the overall crap opinion that GRM board members seem to have about Toyotas. this would save us from about 2 new rusty Tacoma threads a week and a few general sheeple buying toyotas threads.

Looks like a Tundra frame. Toyota has been replacing certain years of them for free. The local place where we bought my wife's van has stacks of them, and a few shop guys that will do two truck in a weekend. I work with a guy who had his done as well, and he said it was like a new truck when they were done. They even replaced the rear leaf springs at a minimal cost as they normally didn't replace that part, but his were worn, so they called him, and gave him the good news.

What a crappy company to buy from...

Buying back / repairing for free, vehicles that are well out of warranty.

Who do they think they are anyway?

They didn't offer to fix the door on our Sienna. The welds broke and they gave us a bulletin acknowledging the problem and told us too bad, talk to a bodyshop. And by the way the door will probably need replacing. Its 5 years old for berkeleys sake and we have to buy a new door? shiny happy people. Along with the rest of the generally shoddy construction, the next one will be a berkeleying GEE EMM

Go up the chain of command until you're happy.

You'll have to do that with GM as well.

show me an example of another car company that has had to recall 5 year old trucks to replace the frames because they just decide to break one day...

Only because the government is forcing them to do it. Wow, just wow.

What years are the Tacoma's affected by this? I had forgotten about this and a Taco was on the short list of trucks that I hoped would be non-horrible to drive in the config I'm looking for (four cyl, five speed, 2WD, ext cab but not a four door).

In reply to Javelin:

AFAIK it's a voluntary recall, have you got any information on them being forced? My mom owns one of these trucks and it was not listed in the recall.

Remember, the frames weren't built by Toyota, they were contracted. Dana built the faulty frames: http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/18/report-dana-coughs-up-25m-to-toyota-over-rusty-tacoma-frames/

Seriously guys, everyone loves to hate on the winner. GM was #1, lots of hate. Toyota made #1, again lots of hate. I've had lots of well-used, well-worn Toyotas over the years and haven't had any complaints. Same goes for my Ford truck.

Sounds like good overtime work to me. Once you do a few I assume you get good at it,and two guys can tear into a project with lifts and such in no time. I would love to do stuff like that. Of course wrenching on a vehicle that new would be a stark departure for me anyway, so the idea of not breaking every bolt, and fastener sounds great.

Agreed 100%, and one of the nice things about working at a dealership. You see the same crap every day, so you'll get lots of practice.

"That new"? They're all over 7 years old, plenty of time for all of those Toyota peanut-butter bolts to get an unfavorable strength to thread rust ratio. Plus all of the brake and fuel lines, although since it's Toyota, premade lines exist in the service channels. (Well, theoretically premade, they always get mangled in shipping)

They are replacing the frames that rusted through...I assume the rest of the underside isn't going to be in pristine shape.

No they are replacing all the tundra frames for a certain year range. My friends wasn't rusty at all, but they replaced it anyway.

For new cars I've owned a: Ford 5.0 Mustang - very reliable, terrible transmission feel Z28 - awesome engine/shifter/suspension, horrible reliability 2001 Toyota Prerunner - very very reliable, zero issues

It is what it is.
