So I am replacing the encoder motor on the transfer case of my 2005 AWD Chevy Astro. Any of you have experience with this job? Easy enough to get it off after getting the front prop shaft out of the way. My question is regarding the position of the output shaft over which the encoder motor socket goes. The instructions say not to turn the encoder motor socket to match the output shaft on the side of the transfer case. The shaft is clocked 90 degrees out from the socket on the new encoder motor. I am waiting for a response from Cardone about this but they only have an email account for tech questions.

Anyone?

Just googling out of curiosity and found this:

The internet said: when you have it out, take a 9/16ths wrench and rotate the cam the encoder controls, if it moves freely and springs back into place on its own, the t case is probably not the problem.

Might check to see if it's bound up, not returning to the correct position...?

Been there, confirmed that the output shaft/cam after turning with wrench springs back to its original position. Thanks, though.

Was there a big giant ball of corrosion between the case and motor?

Ever failed encoder I've seen died because of corrosion between the two. Aluminum expands a LOT when it oxidizes and it has to go somewhere, and the encoder is the part that gets squished internally.

Got my answer from Cardone--okay to re-orient the socket on the encoder. Installed, codes cleared, test drove. All is well. Now about that Idle Air Motor DTC!
