Hi all,

I've been scouring the internets trying to figure out the difference between the GVD and GVT codes for the Audi 01E FWD transaxle, and I'm having no luck.

The GVD came in the 2005 A4, and the GVT came in the 2006-2008 A4 (according to car-parts.com).

Some sources say that "early transmissions suffered from some manufacturing issues"... not sure if that meant 2005, or 2005-2006...

A helpful link I found in this forum mentioned there are different gear ratios.... I just want to make sure I don't end up with a 3.75 first gear.

https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/transaxles-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-l/152053/page1/

Chances are it's safer to go with the GVT, but does anyone have any extra info on this?

Also, does anyone know the trans code for the Porsche version? If I could find it for a reasonable price, it might be worth it for the longer first gear.

GVD is an 01X (longitudinal FWD), not an 01E.  that's what i have for MonZora.

according to car-part.com and https://workshop-manuals.com/audi/a3_mk2/power_transmission/6-speed_manual_gearbox_02q_front-wheel_drive/technical_data/gearbox_identification/code_letters_allocation_transmission_ratios_capacities/, GVT is a transverse FWD transaxle used in Audi A3's.

GVT is a trans code for fwd a3s

GVD looks like it has the 3.75 ratio.

GVD has a 3.75 ring and pinion aka final drive.   GVD 1st gear is 3.667 and 2nd gear is 2.053

you could swap 1st and 2nd gears from a GYY (02X Quattro box from 2008-2008 A4 3.2L) into the GVD to get 3.300 and 1.850 versus the 3.667 and 2.053.  that is on my list of things to do eventually.

Actually, are you sure about that?

I'm finding that the GVT is the longitudinal 6spd FWD manual trans used in the 2006-2008 A4.

this is a GVT, transverse transaxle from an A3.  it is not interchangeable with an 01E. are you sure this is what you need?

Somebody somewhere made a typo / misprint re GVD vs GVT and that misinformation keeps getting repeated.

This is a GVD, longitudinal FWD transaxle from an A4.  It is an 01X which is the transaxle that replaced the FWD versions of the 01E.

i've found a couple threads on AudiZine forums where someone says GVT is the "longitudinal 6spd FWD manual from B7 A4" and then a bunch of others parrot the "GVT" as short-hand. i've even seen it in the JY listings for these transmissions on car-part.com but i believe it is incorrect.  If you can show me a factory "GVT" stamping on a "longitudinal 6spd FWD manual from B7 A4", i'll give you a dollar.  The one I have (shown dangling from forklift) is definitely stamped GVD.

this guy even calls his a GVT in the listing title and then states GVD in the description.

now this is bugging the E36 M3 out of me.   i went to car-part.com and put in 2008 Audi A4 Transmission.  the first choice on their selection list is the only MT FWD and it says "Transmission ID GVT".

OK, go ahead and click search, and it comes back with a list of 2005-2008 A4 FWD MT transmissions.   Some say GVD and some say GVT.  so scroll down and look at listings that have pix.  Some of them show pic of the option sticker for the vehicle they're parting out.  like this one:

2006 Audi A4 Transmission Assembly-Stock# 49188  •  Northlake Auto Recyclers, Hammond, IN

the top line of text, which is partially cut off, is engine and trans code, and you can see the bottom of the letters at the far right.  GVD.  no way its a T instead of a D.  and the part description they list is "2.0L 6SP FWD GVT WELL KEPT UNIT" so WTF is all i'm saying.

E36 M3, there are listings from LKQ and others that say "MT; FWD, (TRANSMISSION CODE GVT & GVD)" in the part description.

That's funny. I looked at car-part.com as well, and that's where I came to the conclusion I needed a GVT.
I also found a post on vortex where a guy swapped his B5 with a 01E-GVT.

So yeah, I'm confused.
I just want to make sure I end up with an 01E, and what ever comes in the B7's.

You'll need to log in to post.
