I am still questing for a decent winter beater/daily driver.  My big diesel F250 is more of a pain than anything.  An Audi Allroad with a 6 speed popped up on Craigs.  Its expensive, but within the budget, low miles, and manual trans.  How far should I run?

What about this vehicle appeals to you?  What are you really wanting in a daily driver?

These are, by far, the most maintenance intensive cars Audi ever built.  Did I mention, by far?  Far and away!!

Big, big issues with the air suspension, then all the typical 2.7T issues, so boost leaks, egr, O2, timing belt, water pump stuff, then old German car electronic issues.

This isn't a good car to get as a beater.  Buy a Toyota.

I have no personal VAG experience (except my sister's B5 Passat, which she liked but was thoroughly ready to say goodbye to at the end of the lease) but I look at that ad, and I see that the guy just did "Timing belt/water pump/thermostat/serpentine belt/belt tensioner" and he still wants out.  I know every car has a story, and this one's may be fine.  Life happens.  But it apparently comes with dollies to move it around the garage when, presumably, it isn't running.

Luxury Utility.  Bonus points for being somewhat fast and sporty.  AWD and reliable since its my winter daily driver.  I don't drive my unicorn F250 (6 speed manual Lariat 7.3 4x4 CC/SB) or my Viper in the winter.

I had a WRX wagon for the last 2 years, it was great...ish.  Lightly modded with a Cobb tune, full exhaust, and a suspension lift.  General Grabber tires looked the business.

But it was uncomfortable.  Subaru interiors suck.  Tinny, loud, thin, cheap best describe it.  Narrow, not a ton of room inside.  No lux appointments.  Shockingly awful gas mileage on premium for a car sized for ants.

Next car/truck/suv/wagon is going to be lux.  Leather, sunroof, ass warmers at a minimum.  10 year old nav not really wanted but most of the GX's have it.  Needs to be somewhat presentable, under 10k.  Dont give a single crap about MPGs.

GX470/LX470/Land Cruiser/V8 4Runner is #1 on the list but all the local ones are either rats, overpriced, or pop up and sell when I am busy doing other things.   Also looking for a Forester XT with a manual, a X3 M Appearance Package 6 cylinder with a manual, would like an X5M or a SRT8 Jeep but they are all over my price range, TBSS would be great except its a Trailblazer.  Full size Montero is a hard maybe.  I dig the styling but not the Mitsubishiness of them.  Armada - ugh.  Sequoia - Would have to be cheap.

If there is something I am missing I am all ears.

I saw the dollies too.  The perpetual optimist in me tells me they are for a different car.  But I know the truth.

Get a Outback XT instead.

I think you end up in an SUV or a different Subaru based on your requirements.

"It's my winter/daily and I want something sporty" seems kind of conflicted.

Get one of these instead:

Sportier, faster, more pratical and less maintenance intensive than the Audi (not Toyota like though)

Are these really faster though? Don’t the 2.7t motors make 500+ hp pretty easily?

I frequently see allroads with engine trouble or failed air suspension for super cheap. I've wondered how it would be with a coil spring conversion and a TDI swap. Seems like that would make for a very nice highway cruiser.

There's nothing a 4.2L and coil suspension can't fix about this particular car.

Arnott makes aftermarket air suspension part pretty cheap.  around 200/corner.

I would consider it.  however I drive a 2003 BMW X5 with a 5 speed manual so i have some idea what i am getting into.

I love all things VWAG, but I wouldn't buy anything they made with the 2.7t if you paid me to take it.

I still want a W8 Passat, though.  (And I hate the way V8s sound!)

Shoot - I forgot you can get an X5 in a manual trans.  Wanna do a quick learn-me?

The reason fo the desire for sport is even in nice weather the F250 is not a daily driver.  It really only gets used to run around town to haul stuff and go camping.  I really need to drop my price and send it down the road.

My buddy had one.  no turbo 3 liter only. It was a good car, not fast... but a nice cruiser.

Compare stock to stock.  The more you modify, the less reliability you get.

Allroads are a hell of a lot cheaper than V70Rs though.

Stock for stock? Yes.

I can't imagine paying 7k for an Allroad at this point. I feel like that was 5 years ago at least. I feel like for the amount of hassles it's likely to bring you it should be $1500.

I second the Infiniti FX idea! Although they did make G35/37 AWDs as well.

In reply to Vigo :

I found some 4.2 manual trans Allroads for $5kish a while back.  All in New England.
