I had one as my first car in 1987. They do not handle as well as a GTI from the same vintage as I recall. I am sure with the right mods and tires it could do ok. as it seems can anything else.

I would not buy one with an auto. Hold out for one with a proper transmission. They only have around 110hp stock unless it's a 87.5 with the 2.3. I owned one for 12 years and it was one of my most favorite cars. Properly set up (think, bigger sway bars) they handle well and left foot braking gets the tail to slide nicely on loose surfaces. Very sturdy and generally easy to work on. Lots of weight in the nose but that's good for traction for rallycross. Parts to keep them pretty are hard to get now but stuff that makes them run generally isn't a problem. Audi 5000 turbo engine swaps in pretty readily but probably isn't great for rallycross because of turbo lag. N/A you can swap in a 2.3 five cylinder from the same and that will gain you 25 hp with the right exhaust. There's a pretty good internet community out there for them as well.
