What's the skinny? Weak, Strong, adaptable for other applications of North/South engines? Max HP/Torque potential? Which are the cheapest or most plentiful?

Looks like a well-discussed topic. I'm certainly curious, as I'm hoping to find a transaxle for N/S orientation, but front-engine/rear-transaxle a la 924/944/Milano/GTV6...

Subie boxes are probably a better bet (that's what FF went with for the 818 recently), there's a growing aftermarket for parts used for converting them for mid-longitudinal layout cars.
The expense of converting them to 2WD is a concern as opposed to the VW/Audi where you use just as they are.
Also I've not seen anyone but the Australian concern selling conversion kits.
Lots of the GT40 guys are using Audi 016 and 01E boxes in their builds with some luck (012 as well, I think). I think that there is some fear of "bang" but I think if you mind your driving habits then they'll work just fine.
As far as price goes: I picked up an 012 box out of a wrecked A4 for $100 (in Hungary). I don't like the gear ratios in this box (failure to research beforehand on my part) and I'm looking at picking up an 01E 6-speed from a salvage yard for about $500. I hear the 01E is pretty rare in the states though. I think the best option for you would be to find an Audi 5000 and take the 016 box from it. They make a reinforcement plate for it to help keep it from twisting, and I think an LSD unit from a 944 also helps in the strength department.
Page 5 Here has a gear ratio chart that applies to the 016 codes.
I also have a link to a CAD file for the 016 reinforcement plate, but it's on my home computer...
Are you looking for one with the clutch on the engine or on the transaxle? Someone had made a "transaxle" for an alfetta by making a subframe that held a BMW getrag transmisson and a diff from a Volvo I think that was in the same location as the Alfa transaxle. Not sure if it ever got finished though.
