My first build.Circa 1998.
1983 Toyota Tercel 4x4 with 6spd manual.
I am 16 in this pic.
It was surprisingly capable off road.
I love this thread. 
I would have absolutely no place fun to drive a car like this. It would sit in my yard as lawn art.
Pretty sure Mr. D-bag Wilkey lost it on the on-ramp at 1:16. Cool car, but a total Bob Costas.

That Tercel is awesome! My folks had an fwd '85 model when I was born, also in '85, and they drove the mess out of that thing. I've always wanted to find a 4wd one and do exactly what you did. Thanks for sharing.
I had a 4wd Tercel and it turned out to be a dud. I was so bummed. It needed too much work and was too far gone. I ended up trading it to a junkyard for a rear tail light for my Toyota Pickup (at the time).

Thank you. I loved that car. It was a beast. My cat back exhaust was no exhaust from the cat back.
Unfortunately I rolled it trying to be like Colin McRae on a gravel reservation road, I was lucky to walk away.
I'll build another using my old recipe and a 20valve 4ag someday...

6sp?! What did that come out of a GTS celica? There are several for sale up here but I cant pull the trigger for an ice racer/rallycrosser. An old friend once told me "A Toyota doesn't want to leave you stranded but a Tercel doesn't give a E36 M3."

It was the stock transmission. It was a 5 spd in 2wd.
When you put it in 4wd an extra low gear would open up in the transmission making it a 6spd.
I forgot to add, they are very reliable cars. I beat the living crap out of mine for 2 years.
They rust out easily which killed most. They are also very very slow.
It would be my last choice for any kind of racing.at least with the stock motor.

Never knew that. Yeah most are rust buckets up here but I figured for $600 bucks it might be a hoot on ice and dirt
They are a hoot in the slippery stuff. They are a fun car just not very fast. If you do get a manual make sure it shifts in 2wd and 4wd. Finding a replacement trans might be difficult and or expensive.
