My car weighs more than some of the Subarus out there. I started with the heaviest year and added a lot more weight to it in the form of skid plates and about 2 Home Depots worth of angle iron and sheetmetal in the suspension, and balanced it out by removing some lightweight carpet. On the other hand, it hasn't exactly been dominating this year either. It feels a lot more stable on rough stuff than the car that HAS been dominating, so there's that anyway.

Fair enough. Why so much angle iron and sheetmetal? Is the chassis weak on those?

[disclaimer: since rallycross season just ended, I'm just whoring in all the RX threads to keep them on the front page so the season can live on a bit longer...]

I rejected Mazda's suspension geometry and substituted my own!

The answer is GC Impreza: Proven, small, light, cheap, awd, cheap... awd... And if you get bored they upgrade like legos. Personally I like spending time behind the wheel instead of trying to reinvent it.

GC Impreza would work alright, sure, You can even do fairly well with an automatic if you put it into "2" instead of "D".
