I cross shopped the V and the 5( hmmm, isn't V 5 in Roman numerals), the price and the manual are what kept Me on the 5. Takes a lot of gas to make up the $18k difference that I saw when they were first out.

Woah, that's crazy. MSRP now is a 5k difference between the two. Gas savings happen real quick at 44/40 vs 21/28.

John - how does yours compare to the VUE with regards to space & gas mileage? The VUE is also on our list and can be found a little cheaper.

In real life my Vue is averaging a solid 2-3 MPG more than my old Mazda5 around town and rural. Highway is a wash still. I think the Vue is geared better because I tend to shift it sooner than I would the 5 under the same conditions. The Vue is not as good at holding cargo by a long shot though.

I get employee pricing for mazdas, nothing for Toyota. The V was around $36k on any that were on the lots and I drove out around $17k, with a manual. I've never looked since, what are they priced at?

Darwin---> What kind of commute does your wife have? In my 5, I average closer to 29-30 mpg if I am doing mostly highway on my commute. If it is more stop and go/back roads, it will dip closer to 25-27. If I am doing a constant mix of both, 28 mpg is the sweet spot of what I get.

Suburban/urban. No highway really. I highly doubt she would see more than low 20s from it.

We test drove a 5 and a Vue tonight. We like how basic the Vue is. Shifter (manual) felt a little sticky, but I can't imagine its supposed to be like that. Surprised at how well the dinky 2.2 pulls it around. It doesn't feel like its really lacking in power despite it being a pretty poor power/weight by modern standards.

5 was nicer (and a lot newer). What amazed me is how much I liked how it drove. And I hate driving tall vehicles. We have a Focus loaner right now to replace the now-totaled-Prius, and the 5 drives nicer than it IMO. Especially the transmission (both auto). It really does feel almost like a car.

Only gripe my wife had with the 5 was that the middle row is captains chairs. She wanted a row across so that anything behind it won't slide up front, or walk up front in the case of the dog. Is there a grate/cargo divider you can get to put behind the second row to block off the rear area for a dog - like you often see in the back of a Volvo or Subaru wagon?

It looks like WeatherTech makes a pet divider for the 5. I found one on auto anything.com.

would smaller rim size help with fuel efficiency?

There is also a fold out cupholder under the seat that would keep things from sliding, wôuldnt keep a dog out though lol.

I'm cornfused. New or used? I also, VERY briefly cross-shopped the two when we bought ours in (2013?) it was a huge split.

And yeah, Highway mileage in the 5 to FL and back is exactly 2mpg better than the CTS-V. It's a big box to move with not a lotta ponies.

The sluggish shifter on the Vue could be the common issue of needing the shift cables replaced. Covered cables begin to bind similar to how parking brake cables bind. I think $100 cables and $200 retail to have installed.

This will improve the shifting but it will still not be a tight shifter.

Are there any aftermarket steel wheels out there that will fit a '10 5? I hit a pothole yesterday and bent two rims. It'll cost $75-$100 a rim to unbend them. Steel wheels are looking like a good bet now...

In reply to 92dxman: 2010 Sport here bought new and now with 97,5xx miles. Many people look at these vehicles and expect to get 30mpg regularly. Not gonna happen unless you drive 55 everywhere you go. 26 to 28mpg is real world depending on various conditions of course. That's what I get and I have a 30 mile commute (one way). I only wish I had waited for the manual. The maintenance has been practically zero since purchase. Keep oil changed, change transmission fluid regularly (for me that works out to about 30 to 35,000 miles per). I love this thing.

I just cracked 100k miles not too long ago and the last inspection all I needed was a front tire and rear struts. Also, the factory cd player has died and i'm looking for a replacement. Other than that, still trucking and 27-28 mpg avg.

CD players seem to be an issue. I cracked 130k last week, going for 200k before a new car...

We joined the rebel alliance today. 2012 Grand Touring, white. Pretty much like that ^^^^^ but with a killer tint job on the back 2 windows. Unfortunately, it got a flat grey "Michigan Paint Job" on the way home and its below freezing, so it won't be clean for a few days. Before we drove it home, it was one of the cleanest 3/4 year old cars I've ever seen. (Buying from particular/enthusiast owners is fun!)

So what do I need to know?
