This might be the one valid use of a Sentra SE-R Spec-V.  Get rid of the garbage chassis and keep the cheap engine + trans w/ LSD.

175hp, 6 speed with LSD.  Replacement motors can be had from Altimas all day long.

The B16 models have 200hp.  With a few bolt ons they will dyno ~210 at the wheels.

That would be my vote too, though I would argue the "garbage chassis" comment.  My Spec V with turbo dyno'd 270 hp at the wheels.

Silver bullet

I know some of the Honda engines are great choices for the X1/9, the K20 in particular, I think.  The 20 valve 4AGE can be massaged and is easily mid engine configurable.

Ooo ooo.. I know. Saturn Ion Redline. With the Performance Pack they had a factory LSD. The suicide half doors would make getting to the engine pretty easy when it's taking the place of the back seat. I've seen some dirt cheap examples pop up on CL now and then. Look for the ladder tach on the steering column and you should be gold.

did MINI have anything with a factory LSD?

Some Cooper Ss came with an optional LSD. Most common in the first generation (R53) but it's not a super common option.

You can get a FWD VQ35 with a 6 speed in a Maxima. No LSD though.

Another vote for the Honda K-series, mostly due to it having such an enormous aftermarket. Cheap, no, but if you need something, it's out there. It'll be dead-reliable if you leave it stock, but God help you if you go forced induction. In that case, the just-reliable-enough transmission will give up fairly quickly. As said above, help is always available, but it'll be around $5k for a proper solution, though you do get to pick your own ratios. I did the "go big or go home" thing with Midlana, and while I've gradually made it reliable, it hasn't been easy or cheap. OTOH, the previous car I built - Kimini - used a dead-stock Honda H22A1 and I never once had any issue with the drivetrain.

Choose wisely and consider carefully what you want out of the finished product.

I recently picked up an '82 civic hatchback with the intent of a mid engine swap for the street and track.

Dragged home a stock unmolested but high mileage Rsx type S last weekend.

No lsd but for only $200 I have a solid donor,I can always source the civic si lsd trans down the road if its really needed.

As much fun as a V6 might be I think the lighter, smaller engine in a 1600lb car makes more sense as an overall pkg.

Didn’t the SER have a viscous diff?

Maybe the B13.  The B15 has a helical

The obvious solution is to buy the cheap 2000 se Sentra I recently acquired.  It has a roller rocker sr20, the best /strongest fwd lsd transmission offered for a sr20 and I will cut it loose for cheap.  Bonus points for the fact that it's in Jacksonville...

For $800 you can buy an sr20ve off Ebay.  I had one in a b13 that made 196 whp with a cheap header and a cai.  If that isn't enough a turbo setup is easy if you want 300 hp.

Stay away from the 2.5 liter qr engines they are garbage.
