In reply to erohslc:
Wow.
I'd better go take the cats off of all of my carbed, cat-equipped-from -the-factory cars then.
Being a waste of resources and all.
Seriously, I run cats on my cars that were supposed to have them and have no trouble with the cats operating properly or burning out early. These cars all have carbs except for one.

As far as 'on topic' goes, I don't have a link, but I probably have the actual print article in my collection. It may be as late as Wednesday/Thursday but if I can find it I will scan it for you. If I remember correctly, the horsepower losses for a good set of mufflers on a mild small block were in the 5-10 range whereas the glasspacks lost closer to 30.
In reply to Trans_Maro: Shawn, I didn't suggest that folks yank the cats off of working cars. I did point out that they only function as part of a well designed and maintained system. The carb based emission control systems were/are notoriously finicky. The OEM's went nuts trying to get them to meet the limits of the day (gross pollutors by today's standards) for 50K miles. As a parts guy, you know about some of the oddball feedback carbs, sensors, etc. If you are subject to periodic emission control inspections (BC, right?), and have managed to maintain them in compliance, my hat is off to you.

In reply to tuna55 Hard to believe a straight through muffler does worst than a reflex, turbo, x-type muffler. Most of the articles I have read compare flow to a straight pipe, then next a straight through muffler. Usually it is the sound and loudness that rules out the straight through. Anyway here is one flow test: http://www.broaderperformance.com/muffler_flow_tests.htm
In reply to vazbmw:
Note the louvered glasspack (they all have louvers or perforations, right? This site doesn't have a item for perforated) is less than half of the cfm of a turbo type muffler. I had a dyno test, not a flow test, so it is also possible that there are factors other than flow.
And they sound terrible!
My Neon has a glasspack in the location of the stock muffler, but the exhaust goes through an aftermarket hi-flow cat, a resonator and 3 bends before it gets there. It sounds pretty nice, but a WOT, it does holler. I have no idea what brand it is.
In reply to bravenrace:
I still run a cat on my FSP Neon even though I don't have to for the class and the car is not street driven. What am I giving up, 2 horsepower and adding 10 pounds of weight? Considering I am a second slower than a national driver in my own car on a one minute course, I would say I have other issues about which to worry.

+3. Got to that line, and re-read that you have a crown Vic. You gain nothing, may loose some power (depending on engine), spend money, and finally harm the environment.
Bear in mind- it's guys like you (who alter emissions hardware) that we have OBDII- so that OEM's have to be able to detect tampering.
Thanks (cough, cough) for thinking about (cough, cough) of the rest of us...
But I'm sure your personal reasons are quite valid.
Eric Emissions Specialist.
Look at the holier than thou gross polluting motorheads being all righteous. I love the irony.
Don't believe that cats don't cost power. They do (all my cars are so equipped).
i'm an exhaust fabricator for a living
please please please run cats on the street cars, even my "built" drag only car is going to run a cat, if your tune is that far off that your blowing cats...maybe you look into a better tuner
the only smooth, perforated-core glasspacks that i know of are Thrush. Everyone else uses louver-core stuff.
Now if you want quality stuff thats the size of a glasspack, get the Magnaflow 4" mufflers, they are stainless, feature better packing (SS mesh & ceramic wool) & don't cost too much more usually you can find them for 50-70bucks
belteshazzar wrote: did you just suggest that I may lose power by not running one?
Did you read the article GRM wrote comparing various replacement catalysts for a Miata- they included one straight pipe- which did loose power.
May want to go back to that article and read it.

as I mentioned earlier, this question doesn't have anything to do with me ruining cats or making 1.5 extra horsepower. In case you don't want to go back & look my complaint was the price.

Cherry bomb GP's are also perf core.

So this

and this
http://www.jcwhitney.com/universal-catalytic-converters-for-49-states/p2017955.jcwx
are indeed more expensive than these.
http://www.jcwhitney.com/jcwhitney/textsearch_result.jcw?sku=glasspack&shopid=100001&_requestid=1034093
But how about not having lunch out for a few days- it's only a $20 difference. Geez- a universal cat for less than $100- that's not that bad. If you could afford the triton install....
Besides, what did you do with the orignal exhaust off of both donor and recieving vehicle?

Just because I have to change my oil and burn gasoline doesn't mean I ought to pour oil down the drain and set fire to my used tires.
You do see the difference, right?
belteshazzar wrote: ever done an unnecessary burnout?
no.
If it's unneccessary, why do it? Seems kind of pointless.
that, somehow, is justification that you should not spend a few extra dollars on a real catalyst?
Ok.
weel... Obviously I took it for granted that most car guys have sat there and melted their tires down & shrouded themselves in a cloud a toxic smoke just because it's fun. So I would proceed with calling you a hypocrate. As I find that you are right up there with the virgin Mary & Jesus Christ, i'll just give up.
advotate of the devil:
i had an 89 silverado. no EGR, no cat, headers, 3" exhaust. ran clean and passed emissions sniffer test with no cat
my dad has a 90 suburban - identical drivetrain with all emissions equipment new, new converter, timing set to spec, runs great. failed the same test with the same standards.

I've never seen that as fun, but as a complete waste of money. How it's fun is beyond me....
Sorry that I don't live up to your "high" standards.
If I'm spinning tires, it's because I'm on a race course, not for the sake of spinning tires.
But, if you are still looking for reasons to justify not running catalysts on a daily drive car- why? It's pretty clear you are looking for excuses. Just do it and live with yourself...
Dyno comparisonThis doesn't have a glass pack, but interesting anyway
