I had a 99 Subaru 2.5 RS with a WRX swap. It handled pretty awesome and got great gas mileage (25+) and I never babied it.

Chrysler 2.2 Turbos get good gas mileage and are stupidly cheap (except the DOHC TIII's). Handling isn't nearly as good.

If Hyundia puts their new 2.0 direct injected turbo in a coupe with a good 6spd manual, I will be first in line. Pretty amazing engine.

still working on that... what we believe... you can take an S15 gearbox, "pop" on the front case/bell and the tailhousing/rear drive section of the Miata and have the lower gear.....

OR pull the entire guts from the S15,and mount them inside the Miata case

Page 4 already, and I'm apparently the only fan of the Ford Duratec 2.0? Maybe I missed a post. It's very light, good aftermarket, plug ITB's and header will give you 190+ hp and still a flat torque curve.

Its not an Inline engine.

I didn't even catch the I-4 rather than just a 4. You are correct, sir. However, the boxer does make vrm vrm sounds and go fast considering the size.

just to point out.... those aren't ITBs, the induction system on that engine are barrel throttles. And almost anything except WOT and the drive like crap.

Correct, yet is ~is~ a Duratec. Yay quick Google hotlink. Does this error render the Duratec ineligible?

How aboot freaking stock then?

Go hang out on K20A.org. Perhaps they're hard on their engine, but when I read story after story, a trend starts to form, so I preemptively upgraded my base RSX tranny to handle Midlana's 400 whp.

Until you said fuel mileage, I thought of the F20C from an original S2000. Hard to beat 120 hp/liter. I don't have a real-world MPG figure, but I can imagine it's not that good, as you need to rev it to 5K to move anywhere.

I second the SR20VE. I had one in my previous SE-R that made 196 hp and 160 ft/lbs at the wheels, got 30 MPG, and was purchased for $800 on ebay. If you put an SR16VE cam and valve springs in you can rev it well past 8K with no problem. Plus it has a timing chain so no pesky timing belts to change. You can get SR20 FWD, AWD and RWD transmissions cheap as well so you driveline choises are unlimited. Plus there is a ton of turbo parts available if 200 whp isn't enough for you.

I have 270k on a SR20DE and it doesn't burn any oil or smoke.

The Hyundai Gamma motor is pretty good. I sure would like to get rid of my 22mpg/iron/107hp/poor oil control E-tech and put one in the Daewoo.

1.6Liters, 145 hp, 40 mpg bone stock. And they're making a turbo version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NDddEZnpOQ

Odd, the best 1.8L ever built for a street car has to be the Toyota 3TC. Sure some of the newer alphabet-soup motors will make more power, but forced induction will make up for most of that in a hurry.

if you do not mind making a custom oilpan.. the Saab B202 can be a fun engine. Being cranked over to 45 degrees would make it low slung too.. but getting the power to the rear wheels would be a challenge in creating a custom bellhousing

I've been on Clubrsx.com for 7 years now and outside of drag racers and obvious abuse I haven't heard of problems.

The problem with these cars (and others for that matter) is that they attract idiots who do stupid things and then complain when things break.

I am, but I'm biased, and there's not a reasonable criteria to define what is good.

For the most part, I've observed engines that make more power, get better emissions, and use less fuel than the previous versions- pretty regardless of who makes them. So to me, newer is better.

besides, the duratec 2.0 is the same engine that the MZR is, and it makes really good power when it's called a Mazda in a formula car.

(the 2.3 is identical to the 2.0 outside of the slightly higher deck height, cams are somewhat for what it's used for- or Ranger/B Series isn't the same as Focus/3)

Handling isn't nearly as good.

Bring it.

As a side note on those expensive TIIIs , the stock valvetrain is good to 9k rpm. Doesnt make me want one, though.

If i didnt have to pay for it i'd love to try a k20, but in the mean time, i am getting a 4g63 (and dont have to pay for it) to swap into a dodge. hehehe

+++1. Love me some SR20, never drove a VE but the DE are just so flexible. My B14 was a rusted E36 M3box but I had trouble selling it because I loved that engine.
