So my 280Z project needs some new tires after one exploded yesterday-dryrot and 50 psi don't get along too well. I want some new tires but don't want to spend more than a couple hundred bucks-after all, the car was only $300. Eventually the car will be lowered and my 15" mesh wheels will go on, but for now I just want to put tires on the stock 14s. Original size is 195/70-14, but it has 205/70-14 now, which is what I'm looking for. I know I could check all the used tire places around, but then I'll just end up with another dryrotted set of old mismatched tires. Anybody know a good place I can get some cheapo no-name brand tires for 40-50 bucks a piece (or less)? I can get free mounting from my old work, so I just need to get the tires. I'll check all the local tire stores, but I thought someone might have the inside track on a good place. Thanks in advance!

I usually go to the Mexican tire place down the street. They always have the cheapest tires. Helps if you speak a little Spanish.
I just bought a set of 205/70R14 tires from TireRack, $297 shipped for General Altimax RT
If that's too much, look at the Kumho Solus something or other. Discount had them for $45 a piece.

Why not just buy tires once? 14" wheels aren't exactly common anymore, I'm not finding anything priced near what you are looking for. Firestone locally has Primewell stuff for about $90 a tire in that size. Or there's a snow tire. And that's it.
I'd just move to the 15's now and get it over with unless you're really funding strapped, in which case I'd start calling tire shops for some used hoops for a couple months.

got a pepboy's near you? gone are the days of 4 for $99 but they still have cornell 1000's for $73.99 or 4 @ $295.96 out the door
The 15's will look pretty stupid with the stock ride height, and I have no immediate plans to lower it. I'm planning on just getting it running right, driving, and roadworthy, and just enjoying it as is for now. Maybe by the time these tires would wear out I'd be ready to do suspension stuff and get some 15" tires, but for now I'm not wanting to go that route,
$45 a piece for Kumho sounds pretty good...or maybe I do need to just go to the used tire store.
dont used tire places generally charge around $50 a tire though anyways? at least that was the price for all 15" tires at the place i went to.
In reply to failboat:
It depends. Most places around here advertise starting at $20 or $25, but that's probably for really common sizes. I doubt 205/70-14 is very common, but I have a tire place I used to take decent tires to from work that usually gives me a deal. I'll check more into it this week.
I bought a set through www.tirebuyer.com
The parent company is the tire wholesale company that has trucks which deliver tires to independent shops already. You purchase direct and they will drop them at the shop you choose.
I used to buy Chinese tires at terrific pricing. About three years ago a large tax increase was put in place on Chinese tires. Supposedly all tires have increased in price since. I almost like the Primewell tires that I put on the old Chevelle and the Firestones on one of the Saab 900s.
there are four pieces of rubber that serve as the interface between your car and the road. be patient, save for a couple more weeks, and buy good tires. E36 M3 tires are E36 M3.

In the shop, these were known as "May-Pop" tires.

What, you live half a mile from the Mexican border and don't speak any Spanish? And they let you just cross any time you want to buy tires?
Yeah, I know it's a fine line between cheap and a good value. At this point I'm willing to take a little more risk then I would be with the family car. I think I may go with the stock size, 195/70-14, as these seem to be a little cheaper. Discount Tire Direct has Nankang CX-668's for $211 total, and free shipping. Hopefully I can sell the Maxima this week, then I'll have some tire-and-other-z-parts money.
Tires seem to be the only place where people brag about buying Chinese. I don't understand that myself when you can usually get US or Japanese tires for not much more moolah.

I definitely wouldn't be proud of it, but for now I just want something cheap and usable. When it comes time to put my other wheels on, I'll spring for something Japanese in a 225/50-15.
i've got some 205/60/15 tires that i'll let go for not too much money... got them for my Cavalier last fall- they are Grand Prix branded and i paid something like $350 for all 4 mounted and balanced. put maybe 10,000 miles on them before the engine decided that it didn't like the head gasket i had put in it and i junked the car.. $300 gets you them and a primo set of the highly sought after Beretta GT 15X6 mesh wheels..

I was buying Michelin LTX knock offs for $50 each at NTB for the dually. That was 3 years ago. They are like $150 now...The market was manipulated and I get to pay. Kind of like gas prices.

Not sure if I want to pay for shipping from MN to VA Beach. Thanks though!
I think I will just hunt for used ones. No point spending too much coin on cheap new ones when I can find some decent ones used. I've got a few Craigslist ads to follow up on to see if I can get some. Thanks for all the input guys!
195/70R14 was a stupid common size, every Camry on steelies in the 90s used them. Finding a used set should not be hard.
In reply to Kenny_McCormic:
Didn't know this, that confirms my plan to look for used ones instead. Thanks!
Our local K-Mart is now selling super cheap tires, and they don't even have an auto center, they're strictly carry-out. I forget the brand name, I'm sure it's Chinese, and I've never heard the name before. I was considering buying a set to rallycross our Pinto, and that size (13 inch) was around 35 bucks.
