Hare brained scheme in the planning stages - there's an E21 in SD  that I want to get and bring back to Tucson.

I can rent a truck from Turo, rent a trailer from U haul, and get it parted out in town.

But getting a non running car on a trailer would seem to be an issue.

And, this plan may change...

Pull it with a winch or come-along.

something to consider
Turo doesn't allow towing behind rented trucks (so be careful should something happen seeing as you posted it on the internet, i will remove this warning if you ask).  I know this because I really would love to rent a truck on Turo to tow my track car to far away tracks but turo's TOS forbids it.

I did not know that; the listing I was looking at noted the truck had a tow package for your toys....

Does it roll?

Come-alongs are cheap. I've also done it with ratchet straps.

  • Towing or pushing anything

yeah, I have found people who list Turos that have towing capacity in the listing along with notes that state receiver included.

The only place i have found that allows you to rent vehicles for the purposes of towing is Enterprise commercial.  The 2500 would work and is allowed.  It is more expensive than Turo :(

I pulled a Datsun 2000 and a Datsun 240Z onto a Uhaul trailer when purchased using a come along and a dude at the backside pushing.

I have used a lawn tractor and a rope to pull a non runner onto a trailer.

Stampie and I used a manual come along and ratchet straps to pull a 2nd gen rx7 onto a trailer.

I have pushed wrecked race cars onto a trailer.

Where there is a will, there is a way!

I've graduated now.  My preferred method is a snatch block at front of trailer with a long synthetic rope to a second vehicle to pull it up.

I learned from Stampie, a hammer store ATV winch, bolted to a slab of scrap oak wood. Not as elegant as the Warn winch above, but cheaper, I can power it with a $20 garden tractor battery, and I won't be looking for a place to plug it in to household current.

That is another good one.  I need to get a new winch since I burned up mine.

Yep.  That's what I did with my neighbors lawn tractor!

The best way?  Have a really good winch permanently mounted to the front of the trailer and just zip it up.

The best way without such modern conveniences?  Hire someone else.

If you insist on getting the car on the trailer like some sort of peasant, I use a come-along attached to a ratchet strap with a block of wood to use for when the come-along needs to be reset.  I've also used just a ratchet strap before, but I can't recommend that unless you consider having skin on your hands a problem you must solve.

My take on the Stampie winch (that's what I'm calling it from now on).

Cheaper than the Warn, and rated for 2500 lbs vs 1000.

Why not rent a truck/van from u-hual to go along with the trailer you are already renting? They aren't the nicest vehicles to drive or the easiest company to deal with but it should all work together and you are planning on dealing with them already.

I've rented a truck from enterprise very happily to tow a uhaul trailer. Uhaul charges mileage which sucks. We also rented from Penske once which worked out well because they don't charge(this was 2016?) mileage on point-2-point rentals so we picked it up 30 minutes away from home and returned it in the home town.

I hate loading dead cars onto trailers. Last time I had to I found random people willing to help and it still sucked out loud.

Another point is that you may have rental car coverage through a credit card or your normal auto policy but these can exclude pickup trucks so it is worth double checking that too.

I did it with TWO of the 3" wide ratchet straps (I call them tractor straps).  With two straps you can winch with one, then when it can't pull any more it holds the car while you set the other strap to winch.  Switch back and forth.  Definitely a workout.

I use a $50 manual come along from Rural King because my $300 electric winch stopped doing winch things after the 3rd time I used it.

They make a version of that Warn Pullz All that's powered by a cordless drill input that was intriguing.

Faced with the same dilemma a few weeks ago I cheaped out and just did the come-a-long and ratchet strap method: when the cheapest HF come a long runs out of travel, chock the car, shorten the ratchet strap, then take another run with the come-a-long:

I use a drill winch. 1000 pounds of pull. No special batteries or wires needed. Just a drill.

There are cheap Chinese versions out there for around $100. The Warn is about $270.
