I ran 245/40-17s at all 4 corners of my E36 M3 without clearance issues (until I cranked in camber for the track, then needed spacers).

Actually, according to Jalopnik, we are getting the pretty 3-door.

Now, there's a new car I'd actually be willing to buy.

My biggest problem with the 1-series is that it isn't that much different in content than the 3-series. The hatch changes that. It also gets rid of the coupe's awkward rear styling.

All good points, I understand the need to reduce costs, and improve fuel economy whenever possible. However, I would suggest that they could use the Sport Package as an excuse to put some decent-width rubber under the car. I wouldn't expect to see it across the entire model line, but would at least like to see it as an option. The 335i/is gets killed in comparos when it's going against Audi S4s with AWD with 255 width tires up front. And while I'm on my soapbox, I'd like to see some kind of an LSD (mechanical, preferably) available as at least an option on the 1 and 3 series. This way, when I buy a fully depreciated one in 15 years, I won't have to do much to it

an optional LSD would be great.. but aside from the true M cars.. BMW has not made one availible since early 1996. I know, I have one of the last non-M cars with an LSD from the factory. My Ti was built in Feb 1996.. it was not too long after that time that they went to Traction control

My friend the BMW tech doesn't have much good to say about those engines, other than they're fast. Apparently the turbos trigger 'limp mode' at the drop of a hat and are really time consuming (expensive) to troubleshoot and repair.

Dude, that Jalopnik article was from January of 2007. Loss of style points for getting my hopes up for the 3-door.

yes.. once they get hot.. fun time is over. If you could manage the heat better, they would be a lot more fun

Isn't the 1M supposed to get an upgraded oil cooler?

From what I remember he mentioned combustion buildup on the intake valves (he said this is becoming common on direct injection engines - fuel in the intake stream helped keep these clean on older engines), as well as issues with the turbo plumbing and gremlins in the ECU.

Am I the only one here that likes the looks of the 1?

Yes.

I'd still hit it though, with a truck.

I hate them from a looks standpoint. The 3-series even in base form, if not terribly aggressive or original-looking, is still very stylish and flows well. The 1-series looks like the front end is a miniature X3. And I still can't get over the "saggy belly" lines of doors/rockers. I may be one of the few that thinks

Give it a more aggressive front end (especially the "cute" headlights), straighten out the lines on the side, drop a few hundred lbs (it doesn't need to weigh nearly as much as a 3-series) and then I'll reconsider my opinion.

Here's a quick PS of a few small stylistic changes that would make the 1-series look SO much better/more agressive and not so girly.

Only thing I changed is the headlight shape and the rocker-door seam lines.

^Me too. So does the wife.

When I originally showed her the hatchback she said, "what the hell is going on with that curved line between the fenders?"

"Flame surfacing" is a dangerous design aesthetic, doing more wrong than good on most occasions. I don't have a problem with the concept, just the execution.

But the flame surfaces!!! Haven't your heard? It's a German car! It is too efficient for your photoshopping.
