I am thinking about a local M240i for sale that I may be able to get a reasonable deal on.  It is a low option car RWD, stick with no sunroof.   Looking around on the interweb it seems that these are not that great in FS autox due to A) not enough front tire (225 on 7.5" rims) B) lack of front camber, C) possible heat soak of the intercooler D) LSD is an option, but may send it to STU or ASP (gasp), not certain what the SCCA ruled on this.

This looks like a pretty cool car on paper with its boat load of torque.

Has anyone made these things reasonable competitive?

I have seen some talk about a square tire setup with 235/17s,  crash bolts? on the front for -0.5 additional camber and maybe some Koni's.

What says the hive?

PS.  I don't want a CivicTR, FoST, Camaro, Mustang, Vette or GTI.  The Twins are possible, but I am scared of the weak sauce oil burning motor, but will likely drive one to see.  Also a MINI F56 John Cooper Works is a possibility or even a Justa Cooper for GS.

I think the lack of tire is why you don't see them. There are a couple of 2 series cars running locally and they're fast, just not national fast. I think you're going to run into the same issue in STU. You can run more tire, but enough to compete with the M3, Corvette or the AWDness of the EVO/STi? I think they're great cars, just not competetive.

Look up what it costs to put a proper LSD in the car.

I suspect that alone will make you look elsewhere.

What happened to the GRM project M235i?  I guess it was set up for track days with a coilovers, tune and bigger tires.

It's really interesting if you compare the price of the M240i vs the M2 (new of course, I know you were looking used, but just for comparison).

If you add the leather/stereo/LSD to the M240i, you're only a few thousand away from the price of the M2 that has much more power, more brakes, larger wheels and tires, etc, etc. If only I had $59k for one.

Side note: I've never heard of BRZ's burning oil. Mine never burned any in 3+ years and 40k miles. Some may, but years on the forums and facebook pages, it's infrequent enough that I don't even remember hearing of it.

Good to know.  I was extrapolating from current Subaru Fxx motors oil burning, I figure they all likely do it.  If they don't then OK.

Well, looking at what's available there are several slightly used M2s for sale for less than the price of an LSD and stereo upgrade vs an M240i.  Makes sense to get an M2 and run a square wheels setup for autox.  More tire, more camber and LSD included.

Curious that there a bunch of sub 10K mile cars for sale?  That's a big $$ depreciation hit, like $20K cdn.

I can't see why a factory option LSD would take it out of street class. Unless it's dealer installed?

LSD is a dealer accessory for m240, but I read some ambiguous posts about its eligibility for stock from SCCA.  Moot cause you can buy an M2 with LSD  for less $.

Just modern turbo BMWs for you.

If you end up with the M2, let us know how you like it!

Sadly our M235i eventually had to return to the mother ship. Awesome car, though.
