Is running a Ford C6 transmission with the selector in "2" for long periods of time at all harmful to the transmission? My wagon has a 2.75:1 rear gear, so second in the trans comes out to 4:1, which is great for towing up hills and at lower speeds.

A C6 in "2" will drive around at 80mph with three teenagers and a 24 pack of beer without anyones father noticing a problem the next day.

However, towing in a gear other than 1:1 adds  stress and heat to the trans.  Also, on old Fords, 2 is 2.  No 1, no 3.  Just 2.

The question becomes, how much extra heat?  More  heat than the converter slipping more in third and beating the E36 M3 out of the fluid?

Also, I either use D or 1 to pull out. My kickdown doesn't work, so I usually shift it manually to keep it from shifting too early when it's heavy like that.

Converters only make a bunch of heat when they're below their stall speed. Generally the vehicles rear gear and converter stall would be selected such that by about 50mph in 3rd you're past the stall speed, maybe well before 50 (remember federal 55 speed limit in the 3spd era!). So if you're towing at a low speed in 3rd it might be an issue. If you're well past 50mph it probably won't matter. If you have a tach then you can just tell by looking at it.
