Was thinking about doing fly and drive, but getting quotes on uShip shows that it will be around the same amount to just have it shipped. What should I look out for when getting a shipper?
The car is probably not precious enough to rate a closed trailer IMO.
If you want the car in a reasonable time frame fly and drive. Uship has some good quotes but keep in mind the car may sit at the pickup point for days or weeks before being picked up. You need a pretty flexible seller but it can be done. The cars I have had shipped I have used Reliable Carriers it was worth the bit extra for me to have someone who's business is shipping cars. They had all the extras on the truck to take care of low and odd shaped vehicles.
Ah good to know. So if I use someone like Reliable Carriers the pick up date and receive date is a known quantity, not some range?
What cities between does the car have to travel?
My recent experiences are listed here:
Infiniti Q45 via Auction House Broker.
Ford Focus via Uship
Nissan Quest via Uship
Question for you JohnRW1621, how much time did you give the shipper to pick up the car from the time you purchased it? Did you request shipment right after purchase?
The Infiniti was subject to storage fees if it was not picked up quickly. I did not remember specifics.
The other two were both Jax, Fl to Northern Ohio and in less of a rush.
In both cases I gave perimeters of giving them a week to pick up the car and then a week to deliver it.
For the Focus he wanted to pick it up in 3 days and then have it to me in 2 days.
For the Nissan also about 3 days out and then to me in 3 days.
It seems you can do Uship 3 ways.
1) Get a Quote
2) Reverse auction a quote where the job gets bid down.
3) Name your own price
For the Nissan I named my own price (based on 50 cents per mile) and the job had a bite in less than 1 hour. Once you have a bite, you can then communicate details with that shipper through Uship. So, it seems you could have typed conversations with multiple suitors. It is not until you choose and commit to one specific shipper that you gain direct contact with that shipper. Uship is now confirmed that they will not get knocked out of the deal so they then give you direct contact. It was then that I could speak directly to the company or driver.
I recommend you contact the company I used on the Infiniti directly and see if they are interested. First have then quote and then counter at 50 cents (or less) if they come in high.
This is a private seller and I'm sure a few days here or there sitting on the car won't make a difference to him as long as he has the dough in hand for the car.
You're saying try Top One LLC for this one JohnRW1621?
How do you handle payment and title doing this? Are you doing private seller or through a dealership? Do you wire them the money and then have them sign the title and mail it before picking up the vehicle?
Basically what is the order of operations?

Gonna wire his bank the money and have him send me the title and bill of sale through the mail.
Guy says he is a Nigerian prince and doesn't need the money so I trust him.

It varies a little, they will check what trucks are where and space available. I was lucky with the four cars I had shipped they were all near a major city/interstate route. So pickup was pretty easy. Delivery is a little bit of a window but they are pretty tight on there schedules. I shaved a day off my delivery by meeting the truck in Atlanta. They can only be on the road so many hours and by the time he made it there it would have been the following day to Alabama.

Sorry, couldn't resist the last post.
I got information from his bank since they hold the title and I'll send money to him to pay it off. There is some level of trust involved, but at the same time the forum I found the car on had a history where he bought the car from another guy and the carfax he sent over correlates with the posts I saw regarding him buying the car, but at the same time I guess he could try to screw me over.
Yes, call directly to Top One and cut out any middle man. At least get a quote.
They are a fine, upstanding operation from my experience.
