Ok so I've already got the Miata. Now I've been thinking American Iron. See profile pic as part of the problem. Anyway GRM made the case that an older Mustang could be made to go around corners. Any thoughts on getting a last model Camaro/Firebird to do the same? Kind of the cheap Vette route I'm thinking.
hmmm just looking at the 2011 classified at the guy who has 200 mi on his acquisition and is already trying to get rid of it. So maybe the answer is Naa don't bother
pensacola eh?... hey i'm in milton :)...
anyway yes I've read they can be made to turn... as I recall the v6's tend to be more neutral (better balance) but beyond that sorry no info/help...
Yes they certainly can!
Some of you may know Sam Strano. He has a 4th gen F body that is WICKED QUICK! I did a few track days with him and another guy Chris.
Chris also has a 4th gen F body. Those guys were seriously quick!
Sam's car has a watt's link set-up that looks seriously cool (pretty inexpensive too).
The standard: buy some good sway bars, shocks, springs package helps alot too.
Finally, they both run some aftermarket diffs that they say helps tremendously.
Not sure if this helps, but I KNOW they can go around a corner ungodly quickly!

It's not that it doesn't handle, it's the fact that I don't fit it. :) Honestly that's it, I like the power and balance, it just doesn't fit the bill for me. The guy I bought it from autoX's his though, and I have seen several others that seem VERY well sorted out.
Stock vs. Stock I hear the camaro has the suspension design advantage over the mustang.
And I'll echo Rob, if you want an Fbody to handle talk to Sam Strano. Even just a spring and shock combo goes a long way in improving what these cars can do.

I always figured that the suspension had to be better than the mustangs, the later ones have IRS right? You do see them in the NASA CMC but it always seems like there are 2 M to each C.
Accordion, how tall are you and why were you not able to heel-toe, steering column in the way of your size 13's? That's my problem with the miata.
There was fellow with a late model SS who ran our Speedway Autocross's and he gave the Corvettes fits.
4th gen does not have irs and imo does not need it.
The NEW camaros have IRS. The 4th gen F bodies do not.
Lol! I'm actually on 5'11", the bigger you are (and longer your legs) the better you'll fit in this car actually. I can't heel-toe this one because my feet are too small! (9.5) I think with a bit of work I could get the hang of it, but it's not natural like it normally is (I've driven lot's of different cars as a porter).
Like I said, I honestly just feel like I'm too short or something. It's really not that big of a deal, and if I don't get a good deal I won't get rid of it! It honestly does have great torque from down low and feels amazingly toss-able for it's weight.
I guess im a little late. And I agree with Nicksta. Does not need IRS.
Isnt that car sub 3000#'s?
I think they are pretty light. Not portly at all.
I haven't weighed mine, but what I saw online was 3100-3450 (obviously that can't be taken as fact), but they definitely feel like it. I'm used to < 2300 cars though....

Ya know I always have a urge to try and make a V6 spank the V8's. Making do with less and hoping it's lighter some how. Anyway too bad I'm so far away or I might be tempted to try flogging one around awhile. But maybe next time I can sit in one I'll see, if I fit with a helmet on or not.
I should have know it didn't have IRS with all this talk about panhard bars and watts links. Just over at the Stanos site, lots of good stuff and not to costly

4th gens can definitely handle. The co-driver in my ESP 99 Z28 at tours this year is normally an STR S2000 driver, and he said he was amazed at how the Camaro handled. The key is stuffing as much tire as you can possibly fit under it. You can stay pretty basic in front: I've got Koni yellows, 35mm sway bar, Strano springs. Switching to a Watts link will really help in back.
The 4th gen Camaro suspension is way better than the 79-04 Mustang. The Camaro has double a-arms in front instead of the Mustang's McStruts with a separate coil spring. Camaro has a torque arm in back instead of the Mustang's triangulated 4-link.
I will add my Camaro disclaimer, though: it's a great racecar, and has a great engine. Not the best car I've ever driven on the street, though.
Sam recently sold his 2-time ESP winning 4th gen, but he's still the man when it comes to setup. Give Stranoparts.com a look.
Camaro's what be made to handle?

Thank you. Pet peeve of mine.
Camaro's suspension can be made to handle.
