I had a buddy stop by with his new to him truck tonight to show it off. First thing I noticed when he popped the hood was corrosion around the motor. This is not common in AZ. Then he showed me the trickle charger that was installed, that was also connected to a block heater, also not common in AZ. Further looking showed a Motomaster battery and accessories, which look like it is a house brand from Canada Tires.
The final 2 hints that it may not be a desert truck included the rust all through the under body and a Canadian VIN plate. He had no problem signing up for a big loan on it, but couldn't ask for a carfax or vehicle history.
Live and learn, could someone look up 3GNFK12347G170182 for me?
Arizona has a 72 hour law that you can return vehicles to dealers. I want to find out what else is hiding. There is evidence of body work, very good body work, but work the same.
The dealer went so far as to paint all of the suspension components and everything in the wheel wells black to hide the rust, also the outside of the frame rails as well. You couldn't see any of the evidence of salt country until you got under it.
I spent 2 of the last 5 weekends replacing the entire front steering and bushings, rear air ride, full brake system on his Denali. He traded it because of an intermittent start issue. I know when this one needs work it is coming my way as well. I grew up in MN with rust cars, I prefer to not have to work on them again.

Here is the law.
If you tell him now, you're just being "that guy"
1500 - good link, learn something new everyday. Looks like it is time to leave it alone.
Too late for that. The second he popped the hood I saw the corrosion on everything and asked him where the truck was from. He looked at me like a deer in the headlights on why I would ask.
He saw the trickle charger and block heater before he bought it, but never thought it could mean it was from a cold country location. All of the rust cover up and corrosion jumped right out at him after that.
Too blinded by the shiny paint along with new lift and big bling tires (all used dealer installed to pump up price) to notice the truck itself.

Well the Motomaster stuff is definitely from Canadian Tire, so that truck has been in Canada or near there.
Not sure what you mean by a "Canadian vin plate". As far as I know vin's in North America are the same.
Manufactured In Mexico. the lesser Canada.

drunk driver that kept claiming vandalism or someone who kept getting caught cheating?
It has a VIN plate has the Maple Leap on it and states Canada Transport. Definitely different than every other VIN I have seen.
There is a picture of it in the link on there site. http://www.mytruckmax.com/detail-2007-chevrolet-avalanche-avalanche_k1500-used-13707451.html
Its one of dem Mexican Maple Leafs.
Sure looks nice in pictures, but by the sounds of it the truck is not all it appears to be. I hope he didn't pay that asking price. Maybe that is the going price for a fancy Suburban with a bed, but I don't see it. I paid $6k for my 04 Suburban. Now of course it isn't nearly well equipped, or fancy looking ,but man that is some steep price difference.

That is a Transport Canada Certification sticker so yes that truck was definitely sold new in Canada.
I thought you were referring to the VIN plate on the left side of the dash.

Was the car reading KM or Miles on the speedo and odometer? I don't know if you can change the readout or not on this vehicle. Could they have installed a different gauge cluster?

Most GM's and Ford's can be flipped between Metric and Imperial units at the flip of a switch.
