Just got the email with definitive weight on a pallet filled with a VQ30 that is a long block with pan and valve covers and a 350z Trans on it and the weight was 412lbs.
Thats with the pallet folks.
WITH THE PALLET.
Just soak that is.
Ok so you add a few odds and ends. Some coolant. Other doodads... its still crazy light as a package.
that INCLUDES the transmission?
the bmw m20 weighs ~400 lbs alone

dsycks, if you run into that list would you be so kind as to post it up?
Would it be fair to say that one could start with a FWD vq30de + 350z transmission, and then later down the road toss in a FWD vq35de without much headache?
also, any issues using a vq30 flywheel and clutch with the 350z transmission? that would save me a lot of money
if you're gonna start with a FWD VQ, start with the VQ30DE-K with the VIAS. Good for another 30hp in stock form over the standard DE. DE-K came in the 00-01 Maxima and are bulletproof. Or if you go with the DE do the 00VI (VIAS) or MEVI swap into it.
VQ35 has more power but is not nearly as smooth of an engine in the FWD arrangement at least.

It's very tempting, but I would have to be a fool to snag that now.
Plus, this is the second deal that good I've seen on these motors so far. I figure I'll find another later on when the time allows me to do this.

Ideally, I'd like to buy a junky e30 and do the swap on that.. then just toss it in the daily in a weekend.
I weighed my VQ longblocks. 240lbs. No manifolds accesories, just long blocks including valve covers. Both my maxima VQ30 and my g35 VQ35. FWIW they weigh the same as KA24's. Same as a long block, short block etc etc. Gotta love compact aluminum v6's :D
I feel like a failure since Ive had the 3.5 for 3 years now. But it burns oil and should get rebuilt before going into a car. The 3L I've had since mid summer.
So I'm buying my friends S13 coupe for $500, selling the perfectly running KA for $150, and putting in my VQ30 with the ka 5 speed ASAP.
Oh and then modding the knuckles for more steering angle. And putting my spare 5 lug wheels on it. You know, for a cheap basic winter beater. I should stop feeling like a failure after that. :D

Most of the Oilpan is in at the front...
Dsycks... The 412lb pallet should be on its way to you Monday. Enjoy.
YOU STILL had that? I'm shooting my self still for not being able to grab that. Man.
Oh well....

dsycks,
Great thread. Thanks for the info! I am contemplating a similar build. Just out of curiosity, did you have any issues with clearance around the brake booster? If so, how did you solve the problem? Are you in oz btw? We have the RHD model here with a stupid bellcrank system that goes up and over the transmission tunnel.
Cheers,
Greg.
I have been searching VQ forums for a while and have yet to find an answer to this question. I have the engine from a 96 Maxima in my sandrail. I want to upgrade the engine, and want to know which of the newer VQ engines will "bolt in" to the same transaxle I use. I hope it is ok to ask this question on this thread, I think the commenters and author of this thread definately have the answer I seek. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I always wanted to stuff the VQ into a biturbo.
