Between my Scottsdale auction trip this week and next weeks SEMA MPMC meetings, I am spending the weekend in Southern California. Anybody know of any interesting car things, or other things to do? Are there any cool junkyards anymore in LA area? Was already planning on starting the weekend in Irvine at Cars and Coffee.
There are a couple of pick-a-part type junkyards up in sunland, one of which has a classics yard attached to it.
Burbank has a nice Auto book store (Autobooks I believe).
I think the boss just go canoed in the post above.
I am sure I leaned about this link here on GRM and I have consulted it on some previous CA travel.

Tim,
If you don't stay at the Irvine C&C too long(we usually hit it from 6:45-7:45), you can also try the lesser known
event started by some of the original members of the C&C group. These guys feature more hot rods, customs, classic bikes, etc and meet on Crown Valley Parkway in Dana Point. Just hop on the 5 frw south(from C&C), exit Crown Valley Parkway south and drive down to PCH. Just before you hit the coast, turn left into the Salt Creek Grill center, head towards the Starbucks and you'll see the cars.
Couple great local family owned breakfast spots between the two events as well, pm me if you'd like the locations.
There are a couple pick-a-parts in Orange County , one on Beach blvd in Stanton and the other just a few blocks away.
There is also another little known gem, The Automotive Driving Musuem in El Segundo. They have a number of classics on display(including a Tucker) and take the cars out for drives on the week-ends(with visitor passengers).
Just a day or so ago I heard about a classic car junk yard closing in the southern california area. They were trying to get rid of everything. I'll try to find that again and post a link.
You can check the PickYourPart.com website to see what they have at the junkyard. They occasionally have something cool but there is a lot of crap. That being said I've seen early 911s, a lot of BMWs, etc..
If you want a cool junkyard go up to the Mojave and check out the airplane junkyards. Maybe you can get something interesting to turn into garage art.
Cars and Coffee is always interesting, I can't remember if I met you during the West Coast Challenge or not but it's always cool to meet those who promote the automotive lifestyle.
Autobooks-Aerobooks in Burbank is on Magnolia. It's worth the stop and of course there are a lot of other car related things in the valley.

I haven't been there but the Art Astor Collection is in Anaheim.

I have been to the Lyon Museum at the Orange County airport and it's a small but cool collection to see.

Petersen Auto Musuem in LA is always fun. They just hosted a Shelby Tribute event Sat and they have a special "underground vault" that they've just extended. http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/10/overwhelming-popularity-pursuades-petersen-museum-to-extend-vaul/
The junkyards around here that I frequent are the pickyourparts. The cars don't stay there long though, they cycle through them about every 6 weeks or so it seems. Lots of cars but who knows if you'll find garbage or something interesting. Other area self serve yards are Ecology auto wrecking, pick-a-part and upickusave. Haven't been to the last one myself.
Near LAX - best donuts ever.

I hung out on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills with a camera and did some great people/car watching on a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks guys. I was planning on heading to Autobooks. It is right near Leno's shop, which is always worth a stop. My buddy, Dean Case from Mazda said he would pick me up at the airport so we can get to Irvine before it is over and mentioned stopping at the museum in El Segundo as well.
I think I will check out Dana Point Cars and Coffee as well
I cannot think of a better place to get stuck for the weekend than Southern California.
And of course, I have to make sure I do something religious on Sunday, so I will find a sports bar to watch the AFC Championship game. Go Patriots
