Does anyone 'round here remember a guy named Carl Shafer who used to run pretty quick Camaros in the Trans-Am series in the late '70s/early '80's? I've tried searching Google for pictures of his cars but can't find any. He had an orange monster with "Can-Am" style (used on Monzas and John Greenwood Corvettes) fender flares.

I remember him well from his exploits with IMSA in the mid-70's. His Camaro's ran the AAGT class with the new DeKon Monza's and Greenwood's Corvette's. Saw him run more than a few times at Rd Atlanta and at the Daytona 24HR.
Those cars were always fast and always fragile.
There was a Craig Shafer who ran GT-1 and Trans Am w/ orange paint. Last I saw him race was mid 90's. Possibly related? ... but highly coincindental. Craig was from Pa. (SW I think). Google says sponsored by Shafer Construction or Concrete.
Bwahahaha, damn, those WERE the days!

This site has the most complete list of pictures of Carl's or anyone's cars readily available.
If you click on cars, you can look up near any make that road raced. If you click, (in left column) on drivers you can do like wise for drivers.
The site only has pictures readers donated.

Carl died at least six years ago from a heart attack in his sleep. His brother-in-law said it was totally unexpected.
He sold the above car to Ted Mathey in either '78 or '79.lack of any sort of sponsorship was the reason he quit running it, as it was out of his pocket, and expensive due to it tendency to eat rear-ends but especially transmissions.
I spoke to him at Road America in '77 and at the time he said even a hundred and fifty thousand dollars would have let him keep it running longer.
He was an extremely successful farmer, by Wyoming, Ill who was part of the "bio" diesel developement with John Deere.
Never heard of this guy (a little before my time, born in the late 70's).
That said, thank you for sharing because he has probably some of the greatest flares of all time.
If I happened across this car in real life, my first impulse would be to think it was the result of the fevered mind of some cocaine-addled aero engineer, but awesomer.
I saw him run at Road America and Brainerd International. Cars were fast, true dat. I wonder if anyone offers those flares for street use...
Car and driver made a poster of his car, which I have but I dont know how to add it to this form

if you have a JPG image of the poster ( i.e. take a photo... post it to some hosting service ... photobucket etc ) then copy it to the insert image ( just left of the ? under the "your comment"

Back in the 80s, I built a model of a blue Z28 that had a similar body kit on it. At the time, I thought it looked tacky and I left the flares off, but I'm thinking now that they might have been the same flares. I can't remember who made the model kit, though I'm pretty sure that it wasn't Monogram and that it was probably 1/25 scale. Sorry, no photos.
I didn't really like the model and later built a yellow Monogram 1/24, but I really like the photos of the actual race car.

This is proof of time travel.
He was a ricer hooked who somehow traveled back in time and got stuck there. I'm sure this is a Veilside kit!
