Simple really. Audi A4, with the 1.8 turbo motor are really cheap around my way. I was thinking of getting one and adding as much lightness as I can. Up the boost stickey tires of some sort and go.

The question is how much boost can I add with out tossing a pile of cash at it and or blowing it up. Is there a poor man's mod to these things that nets a pile of boost. I am thinking that with AWD traction will not be an issue and gutting an A4 should net me something well under 3000 lbs and hopefully alot more like 2500 lbs. (Probably optimistic but hay it is a target)

Handeling I am hoping that the stock suspension will be all I need as they are pretty good out of the box and again lightness should help and AWD when working well hides lots of sins

Looking for ideas and or advice on this one. Seems like a relatively easy build as it is mostly deconstruction and then hopefully minor tweaking of the stock components to add hp.

Make sure the engine isn't sludged up inside. Drop the pan and clear out the screen, inspect the crankcase venting. You could be onto something here. The front suspension likes to wear out, look at the joints and bushings.

The earlier a4 quattros had really stout internals that could take lots of power. After i wanna say 2000ish it went to skinnier rods that wouldnt hold the 400+ the older ones did. Slap on a t3 manifold with a turbo bigger than your fist (unlike the stock k03s), add the supporting stuff like injectors, fuel pump, intercooler, clutch, etc and it should do exactly what you're looking for

I've always wanted to take one of the sub-$1000 early quattros in my area and see how much rallycross it takes. Anything that breaks, I'd hobby-hack a half-million-kilometer Toyota junkyard part into.

Ha, I was just thinking the other day I've seen a metric berkton of these at sub-challenge price recently. I've had enough friends with B5/B5.5 chassis VAGwagens to make me swear I'd never own one, but this idea still kind of intrigues me as a challenge build.

IIRC, they respond pretty well to bolt-ons and a tune, but the K03 runs out of breath pretty quickly. There's something about using an oil filter from a tractor to improve the paltry stock capacity (something like 3-3.5 quarts.) It certainly seems like there is a lot of weight and complexity to be removed.

I say do it

There is even a wagon option.

The B5's are heavy, even stripped. But I say do it.

The stock internals hold pretty well, but the stock turbo is tiny, wont make much boost beyond stock levels.

I say Chinese gt38rs clone and injectors and see what happens!

Oh Ill be following along as I have a b5 in my driveway.....

There is also the Allroad that had the 2.7 Turbo motor. Most of them had the Tiptronic transmission, but there are a few 6speeds as well.

The Allroad used air suspension, but apparently you can swap the regular suspension from the A6 onto it.

Years ago when those first started getting scrapped my friends and I would refer to them as "the suspiciously new Audis" during junkyard adventures.

Some guy on NASIOC a couple years ago bought an Allroad Quattro for $20. Not $200, Not $2000, but $20. It wasn't running, and he noticed that the engine speed sensor wasn't bolted on. He bolted it on and it fired right up.

I wonder what the guy did with it.

These things ate bloated pigs. Curb weight of 3700 lbs. Then again I bet each seat is 100 lbs. Take all the other stuff out and 3000 may be obtainable.

Junkyard rates for these motors are 300ish - budget another 500 for some bits and bolt it right into an earlier chassis. The 1.8T MKI, MKII, and even MKIII are tons of fun and really rowdy with just the intake, exhaust, and chip. Puts them in the 250whp range. 400WHP is doable but takes bigger turbo and downpipe along with injectors and software.

If I don't end up racing my FSP Rabbit much, a hot 1.8t will replace the 1.8 8v hydro motor.

Things like this have me thinking. A little over budget but I bet 2k would get this in my driveway.

Offer low see what they say, what could possibly go wrong.

My guess for the front seats would be 55-65lbs each.

I am thinking gut it and then 4 racing seats. And room in the back for a picnic basket.

This thing with say 350 hp would be a good time.

Wonder if you could make it I to a Audicamino?

Or a crew cab Audicamino.

Is it just me or is the idea of cutting the back off then welding the back section back on behind the second row seats and narrowing the back hatch to fit between the rear fenders. Kind of a 4 door Ute thing.
